Hi there!

A lot of you TDM enthusiast are riding along with a large or better, high screen, just like me. On this screen I've attached a X-screen setup to make it even higher. And I think most of you will recognise the "problem" with a high screen: the increasing flex in the top part of the fairing.

In 2012 I stumbled upon a website of an Australian guy who found a rather simple solution for this problem. He emailed me pictures of his solution and offered to make them for me. But he soon replied the shipping costs would be pretty high so that wasn't a real option. So I decided to copy his idea and here it is.

He made the brackets of inox and I decided 3mm thick aluminium would do just fine and is a lot easier to handle.

The two holes in the top of the brackets are with tread (5mm) to fasten the screen strait into the brackets so a pretty stiff construction exists.

Of course the top part of the fairing is missing in the pictures but it covers the entire bracket on both sides (otherwise you can hardly see the alu thing).

I am very curious what you think of this :)

A bit beyond my fabricating skills. I can see the benefit, especially for tiger screen owners.

That's a great job.

When I had my fairing off last week I saw how much stiffness the inner cowling lends to the fairing, when the mounting screws are correctly tightened and could only think of laying up some fibreglass on the back of the inner cowling and inside the fairing to strengthen it....old school as they say

While I understand an aussie could add a (flying ?) monster spider / snake shield to secure his riding experience, I would never follow the same path, mainly because :

- there is no monster spider / snake in France

- I have a tall screen and it does not flex that much even at very illegal speeds

- I don't like to have a metal throat-cutter in front of me while riding

That said, flexible things are not always a bad thing, just think about the wings of an airplane...

Aww. Great idea and work but a valid safety point should the worst happen, it's hard to get a total win. Would make an awesome template for 3d printing.

Guns could potentially mitigate the worst happening. Just sayin.

Yes it is, but, before your neck gets anywhere near the metal it will have had to travel through several inches of very sharp and rigid plastic first !

Thank you for this healthy remark :good:

Even a piece of plastic can be pretty sharp:

All the front fairing is affixed in such a way it will break off the mounting points in case of a collision with the rider's body.

So even in case some plastic parts get broken, this will lower the risk of getting injured.

In the same way, the screen is affixed with plastic screws that don't resist shocks.

There still is a risk, but it is much less than with a rigid metal part firmly placed in front of the rider.

Can't compare with a plastic knife used by a firm hand on a lettuce...  ;)

I get your point, but do you reckon Touratech is pretty crazy?

"A firm metal part placed in front of the rider", and a lot higher to:

BTW the screen is fixed with metal screws instead of plastic ones.

This construction looks actually dangerous in case of an accident

Eek. One could force ones swanickles through that like pork through a sausage machine if the stop was sudden enough.

I still have scarring from smacking the boys off a Kawasaki petrol cap as I went over the bars.
