Hello,
Sometimes when I try to start the bike (TDM 900 2002) this happens:
* the starter rotates for 3-4 seconds
* the bike does not start
* 19 is displayed on the dash
* the check engine light lights
* push the start button again, I can only hear the fuel pump, no starter
* turn key off/ back on - bike will start OK

Sometimes I need to turn the key on/off 3-4 times before the bike can start (and not display error 19).

I checked what is 19 and it says "open circuit to side stand switch". So I tried kicking around the side stand, it doesn't seem to make any difference. I also tried to switch into 1st gear, side stand on, try to start - only check engine light lights and the starter does not turn, also no error 19 is displayed.

I also did the following, traced the wires from the side stand switch and short circuited them with a U wire at the first connector so that it seems to the ECU that the side stand is always off. Now with this I can start the bike on 1st gear and side stand on while holding the clutch (so it works), but still from time to time I get the error 19, which doesn't make any sense.

What else should I look into?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,
Ivo

According to JBX's site, error 19 is a "side stand switch" fault.

Error #19 is officially a side-stand switch error but it is more often a main switch issue (false contact) or a faulty alarm connection.

I had this recently and it turned out to be the connector blocks under the air box needed cleaning.
Every time the bike is washed, they get doused in water and never really dried properly.

Mine is still on going. The full block on the fuel gauge rarely works the horn is hit and miss and the oil level warning light comes and goes as it pleases.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check all the connections today/tomorrow and let you know my findings.
BTW I also got caught in a heavy rain last week and for 10 minutes or so the bike was like working on one cylinder under 3000rpm, above that it was all good, then when it dried out that disappeared, so I guess there is something going on with water/connectors/wiring.

I cleaned some connection sockets yesterday, but never got under the air box.
I cleaned all sockets around the air box, under the seat, near the ECU with contact cleaner and let them disconnected for 10+ minutes, then connected them again. Same story - error 19 here and there. I never got under the air box because I'm not sure how to disassemble there and I'm not too confident.
Another thing is that my spark plugs are ~29K miles old (iridium ngk), so I'm going to my mechanic to replace/check them this week and we also have a look at the connectors under the air box.

Airbox is one bolt near the head stock, and then 2x jubilee clips at the throttle bodies.

Then just lift out the way - note that pipe are still connected, but give you enough space to work.

I finally managed to clean those connectors:
http://i.imgur.com/WuJIg.jpg

Contact cleaner on all, left disconnected for 15 minutes then connected them back, I couldn't spot moisture or corrosion anywhere, just on one the male plugs were a bit "greenish" but only a bit. Now I get 19 error less often but still. When it starts it starts immediately, but when it doesn't it sounds a bit different and rotates kind of faster. I don't get the 19 error immediately - only after trying to start for 5 straight seconds or so, key off/on and it starts.
What else should I look into?
Do you think I should change my spark plugs as well - 29K miles on them? I haven't adjusted the spacing ever or anything.

Two days ago I also cleaned the main switch, where the ignition key goes - spayed a lot of contact cleaner, moved the key around a lot, when I took it out it was covered in black stuff, so cleaned some more until it was coming out clean. Since then no error 19. Yay! If it starts happening again I'll post update, but so far not a single error. ! smile.gif banana.gif
