I think I’m getting the early stages of a starting problem on my 2002 900. The last couple of Monday mornings I wheel the old girl out turn on the ignition, press the button and get a single, loud click as a response. The starter does not turn. On both occasions, in true IT helpdesk fashion I’ve “turned it off & back on again” and on the second attempt the starter has turned over – just and she’s fired up OK. The first time it happened I had no further problems for the rest of the week. But this morning, I had to stop at the end of my thirty minute commute to fill up, when I restarted it, this time, I pressed the button and held it in continually. Again, I got a click immediately and after a couple of seconds the starter slowly turned over (just) and the engine caught and she ran fine. When I got to work 10 minutes later I had a quick look, but she started OK. The click I heard was from the starter motor relay. I’ll do some checks tonight when I (if) get home, I was going to do the following:
- Voltage checks with the engine running and when it’s been off for a few hours. The battery is a 15 months old Yuasa – they usually last 2-3 years for me. I put the bike on the Optimate over the weekend and that is showing the battery as OK, so I don’t think it’s a battery/charging issue.
- Clean the contacts in the RH switch cluster.
If both of these don’t fix it, I’m thinking it’s either a starter motor relay problem, or as I noticed in the manual there’s also a “starting circuit cut-off relay” which should be checked. Anyone know where the “starting circuit cut-off relay” is located? Anything else anyone thinks I should check?
