I think I’m getting the early stages of a starting problem on my 2002 900. The last couple of Monday mornings I wheel the old girl out turn on the ignition, press the button and get a single, loud click as a response. The starter does not turn. On both occasions, in true IT helpdesk fashion I’ve “turned it off & back on again” and on the second attempt the starter has turned over – just and she’s fired up OK. The first time it happened I had no further problems for the rest of the week. But this morning, I had to stop at the end of my thirty minute commute to fill up, when I restarted it, this time, I pressed the button and held it in continually. Again, I got a click immediately and after a couple of seconds the starter slowly turned over (just) and the engine caught and she ran fine. When I got to work 10 minutes later I had a quick look, but she started OK. The click I heard was from the starter motor relay. I’ll do some checks tonight when I (if) get home, I was going to do the following:

  • Voltage checks with the engine running and when it’s been off for a few hours. The battery is a 15 months old Yuasa – they usually last 2-3 years for me. I put the bike on the Optimate over the weekend and that is showing the battery as OK, so I don’t think it’s a battery/charging issue.
  • Clean the contacts in the RH switch cluster.

If both of these don’t fix it, I’m thinking it’s either a starter motor relay problem, or as I noticed in the manual there’s also a “starting circuit cut-off relay” which should be checked. Anyone know where the “starting circuit cut-off relay” is located? Anything else anyone thinks I should check?

Assuming yer battery is good.

Could be the starter solenoid, that's where the clicking noise is coming from.  Might need the contacts cleaning/tightening or could be corroded internally.  Worth checking you've got good contacts to the starter motor also.

Check your earth too, and if you replicate the click and no start get a multimeter on there and see where the power's going.

A low battery should result in multiple clicks (relay clicks shut, starter draws current, voltage drops too low to keep the relay energised so it clicks open, voltage restored, relay clicks shut, goto 10).

Single click means the relay's closing but power's not getting to the starter, so I'd start by checking all the connections from the battery through the relay, through the starter and back to the battery via the starter and battery earths. The Mrs Divvy does the same occasionally, I swapped the relay thinking it was that but it still does it so I plan to check the earths next.

Another option is a worn ignition switch barrel. I've had it a couple of times where the dash lights illuminate but the starter circuit is not complete. There must be two contacts to make in the switch. A little wiggle of the key and all is carroty. There was another poster on here who had exactly the same problem and he was a happy bunny when he followed my same advice then.

The big click you hear is the starter solenoid working.

This means the starter cut-off relay works ok and the battery/wiring/switches are also ok.

So the problem seems to come from the starter engine : worm-out brushes, etc.

All TDM and also the XTZ750 share the same starter engine.

More stuff to check, cheers guys. It started ok when I left work, but I hit a five mile tailback due to an accident. Filtered all the way to the front and then turned the engine off! When the police reopened the road I thought "I hope it starts or I'll look such a prat with 1000s of other vehicles behind my that I've just filtered past". It started fine thank God!

Sounds just like my quad did.http://www.carpe-tdm...d +startermotor Especially the part where its fine after the first poor start.

Replaced the starter motor brushes on Jono's recommendation & all is well.

Hope my link works. Never done it before :unsure2:

Looks like they are available on ebay :good:

Just a thought. Given where the starter is on the 900 might be worth checking the actual connection at the motor itself for corrosion. Tis the salty season after all.

When you turn on the ignition do you hear the fuel pump activate?

When I started to have problems with mine I would hear the starter relay click but nothing else except the temperature gauge would go full deflection return to zero before rising again. Looked at the side stand switch and it would work for a few days. Then changed the battery worked fine, then one day it did the same - would not start and the temperature gauge to max. Think this is related to the immobiliser kicking in

Put the spare key in and it is working fine every time. Now run it on the spare key. I have tried to reset the main key as per youtube but to no avail, so think the chip inside has died. This key has been the main key for the last 10 years.

Might be worth trying the spare key and see if the fault reurns
