So, a quick sprint into the garage to do this:

Let's see, if the bit of black foil will help with the reflections in the dashboard, or if it will be of no consequence.

Glückauf
Ralf

Dear participants of our seminar "The Care and Feeding of Japanese Adventure Twins", please let me summarise our findings of today's lecture:

  1. The Puig racing screen and the Bodystyle handguards are nice.
  2. Heated grips are really cool ... wait, what?
  3. The facial expressions of snow plows' drivers may range from flummoxed to flabbergasted.

I wish you all a happy new year with lots of smiles per mile, health, love, and prosperity.

Glückauf
Ralf

28000km | 200km, Bergisches Land, Germany "orange Kool-Aid or: more braaaaaaaap!"

Hello everybody,

another update from the mud pit.

Through the time with the Africa Twin I found the build quality lacking more and more. Both handlebar switch clusters had to be replaced under warranty, one ignition coil lost the connection to the spark plug cap and was replaced under warranty, and both wheels are to be replaced as well because of spoke corrosion. The last straw was the wear I found in the cush drive part of the hub. The rubber inserts had worn into the alu of the hub. Argh. Warranty was over in April this year, and the wheels on backorder. So I went looking for a replacement. I somewhat lost the passion, and even lost the feeling of pleasure in cleaning the bike, because of the potential issues I might find.

Tried a BMW R 1200 RS, but my knees did not agree. Checked the GS, but my wallet did not agree.

A friend recommended a 1090 Adventure. Hmm, did not have this on my list at all.

Ok, why not?

Started to talk to some KTM riders at my usual coffee stops and got a dealer recommendation.

Went there and had a nice talk about my riding style and personal preferences. He recommended a test drive on the 1290 S@S. So I did. And I liked it. A lot.

Today I collected the bike and had a short 200km bimble around the countryside.

Wow. Just wow.

The electronic suspension is fantastic, brakes are superb and the engine. Wow.....over 100Nm @2500/min max is 140Nm.

And the 160 horses can be incredibly tame and smooth, but if you want, you can really let the beast out.

It is much quieter than the AT and much more road oriented. Very precise handling.

If I had to sum it up in one sentence: TDM on steroid. A lot of steroids.

I'm extemely happy with the bike.Hope the reliabilty will be acceptable.

Glückauf
Ralf

Good to hear from you again Ralf, that KTM sounds a beast. I recently had a week in Scotland with a former Carpedian who now has a KTM - an 1150 I think. that was fast enough, so the 1290 must be a rocketship!
