sounds more like your clutch is making the howl tho.
only when you take off hard ?
not when you take off easy and feed the throttle in?
some TRX have the same problem.
it turns out the clutch basket cannot clear itself of oil quickly enough, so much so that Yamaha brought out its own modification which involves drilling relief holes in designated positions around the basket to achieve this.
cheers

When you go off on that bike quick, them rubber things, them that make the noise, right.. it aint them.
Its is that oil in the clutch spinner.
Use that side dipper to see oil,
change oil it needs. you have might.
sorted.

I've been suggested the "cushdrive rubbers" may need replacing
at least I have a name now

But then not heard of the cush drive rubbers screeching either.
Hope you get it sorted.
I do have the details of the fix for the 850 clutch as it's something the race bike needs, will be happy to mail them to anyone that needs them or attach them to a post if it's not already in the knowledge base?

It isn't the clutch slipping, as above its to do with oil in the clutch not getting out quick enough.
You'll tend to hear it more when the bike is cold at the beginning of journey's. Once it's warmed up the oil is thinner so gets out quicker.
If however it's confirmed as the cushdrive rubbers you can see them here:

let me see if I understand you right
you're saying that it could be dense oil escaping from the clutch disks making that noise?
I've used car's semi synthetic oil last time, but had that from before and the oil was from a bike shop (although I don't know what they used when servicing)
if that's all and no harm is done I won't bother then
clutch has never missed a blink, and I've tested it
will disassemble and check the rubber under the sprocket in case too
thanks

No, its the fact that when the bike is standing for a long time the oil is squashed out of between the plates . the thinner / older the oil is the easier it is to squeeze out.
So first time you set off there is no oil and you get the metal on metal screech.
New oil is thicker and tends to stay between the plates.
The easiest way to see if this is what is happening, is to operate the clutch lever a few times before you start moving, this will allow the oil to get between the plates and there should be no squeel.

Simples,
Ivan
I understand you now
the thing is, it usually isn't the first time as such
it is the first one on a rush usually
in the morning I'd be leaving the house, get out of the estate until a traffic light
that is about half a mile
only when (if) leaving the traffic light on a rush I'll get it
very similar when leaving work
usually by the time it happens the temperature needle has moved from the bottom, a third of the way to the usual position I'd say

I can confirm it does (just like many other wet-clutch bikes). The "freshness" of the oil doesn't seem to affect it, the bike being cold does. I guess when it happens, the bike isn't quite warmed up yet and you are just pushing it a bit too hard

Had similar with rotax single I bought .. oil was old rather than dirty, turns out bike had been little used last few years.. (can semi synth separate out ??) Couple short oil changes seemed to work... also be careful if using car oil, avoid those with additives common in car oil
