Ended up chissling a few bolts, but at least been able to undo it. Will have to get replacement bolts as those are fucked.

Hi all wonderful helpers!

I swapped the engine and not that far from the end, it seems, unless it doesn't start.
I forgot to mark which spark plug lead goes to which cylinder. The leads are different length, one is twice as long as the other. Does anyone know which lead goes to which cylinder?

It doesn't matter on a mk1, it uses wasted spark

Hi all,
Another question I have if anyone is willing to help:
Just put back the carbs and found that float chamber drain hoses can get back on, the must have hardened over time and seem to have shrunk as well, feels more plasticky than rubbery. Anyone knows a good way of putting them back or so I need to order some tubes? Could put up a pic but have no idea how..
Many thanks in advance

An old trick by some car restorers for refurbishing rubber, is to add some wintergreen oil to a shallow pan of simmering water and leave the components in there, for 30 minutes.

I managed to recover some carb rubbers this way, but it wasn't a huge difference. There are different methods

Here's one of many links you find when googling 'wintergreen oil rubber' https://forum.ih8mud...results.791355/

This guy mixed W.G. oil with rubbing alcohol http://v4musclebike....ead.php?t=13477

By the time I get wintergreen I think I will manage to get new hoses. Fuel hoses need replacing so might as well renew all I can. Thanks for the advice though, mental note added for future!
While we talk about those carb float chamber drain hoses - where do they connect on the other end? Or do they just left open for draining? I have not noted where they have been placed before, would be good to know!

they follow a very circuitous route to eventually appear behind the rear brake pedal - i have never manged to replicate any of the times i have tried but you can get them fed through down inside of frame - but basically yes under bike so if they do overflow onto road or more normally garage floor

That's good help, thank you guys.

An alternative to rubber is silicone tubing, I haven't used it but seen it in use for fuel, unsure of any very long term issues

The best is probably Tygon F-4040, readily available, EG https://www.ebay.co....VxMMUd0UDfYorpQ

I am going to a shop that stocks fuel hoses today and realised I did not measure the size of tubes! The garage is 35 min drive away, can you please tell me the size of fuel hose for tdm850 mk1?

I think my tdm old tubes are these. They look ok, not so clear as it used to be so I reckon I'll just renew it for ease of mind

Ran into another problem, hope someone can shed some light on it:
Trying to replace a choke cable and problem is that while trying to undo the plastic nut (on the inside of the bike frame) to release the cable, it spins with the whole cable and I can't find anywhere to grab the cable to stop it spinning. Anyone has an idea on how to do it?

I don't know the setup - having a 900 - but if the present cable is to be scrapped, can you simply cut thru' it and remove the two parts separately?  :dunno:

Yes, I think that's the only way out.

Also, where is Crankcase breather hose? I have marked where it needs to be attached but haven't marked the hose itself.

I hope people have not fed up with all my questions, but here is the only place I can ask.

I thought, though my memory is a little rusty, the only breather hose was on the rocker cover, you sure you don't mean the oil feed hose from oil tank to the engine ?

No, definitely not that one. (I shouldn't use a word "definitely" with my little knowledge though).
The inlet with label "crankcase breather hose connects here" is just below fuel pump, little inverted L shape metal tube. And no idea what needs to connect there.

I guess it's on the oil tank (hose #12 connects to it):

Sounds like it's the metal tube on the oil tank.  I think the pipe runs from there to the oil pump and it is a part rubber part metal pipe.

If it is that pipe, when I had my mk1 (which had been stripped ad rebuilt badly) that pipe was connected as if it were a breather, but when the bike idled on the stand oil could squirt out of there.

I ended up using a piece of silicon tubing to connect it to just above the gearbox area/gearbox cover, at the left side of the engine. This allowed the oil coming out of there to drop down above the gears and back into the sump. I never had a problem while it was plumbed like that
