The XTZ750 has a similar engine layout/similar cases to the TDM doesn't it....so has this guy stamped the hell out of the brake pedal ? !!!

Messed the starter up by jumping with that car battery more like, done it myself. :punishment:

A few have fitted the 850 in them so engines are very similar. As for the brake pedal? fell off and bend it back?

I just thought it was funny. The XTZ doesn't have a kickstarter.....but he seems to think it did have !

.......explanation please

why does jump-starting off a car / battery cause disaster?..........and, by the way, what sort of disaster?
I'm sure I've done it at least once.....without bad-stuff consequences....

Does the same apply to using a 'power-pack' type thingie?

I think that's a myth.

Never had the slightest problem.

The only difference between a car battery and a mc battery is that of the internal resistance (and, as a result, max current). Jump start wires with clamp coupling would easily compensate for the lesser internal resistance of the car battery, not that it would be crucial anyho...

I think its only a problem in extreme circumstances.

Because car batteries are higher capacity someone could crank the engine for much much longer than if using the bike battery. The starter motor isnt vented so heat can easily buld up in the windings.

Also, a car battery can provide more amps. Amps are limited by the motor winding resistance, but because the voltage of the car battery sags much less under load than the bike battery does , the starter motor dissipates more power - again it means much more heat.

A weak motor with weak brushes could be brought to its end of life much sooner by using *greatly extended* periods of cranking than normal. In most cases though, if you're just getting out of a flat battery situation it wont be a problem......

.....except if the car battery is quite flat too.....and then when the bike starts up not only does the charge system have to recharge the bike's battery but also the car battery too if you don't remove a jumplead
