.... I might try to find out if he still rebuilds shocks as a sideline though....
Chris, I'd be interested to hear the result of your enquiries, for filing under "Could be useful sometime".

So.... I gave them a ring on the old number, not expecting an answer... and was shocked (!) to find they were still open. Retirement has been postponed until he sells the business. He also says when he goes to race meets people still hand him forks and shocks for rebuilding, and he is setting up a home workshop for that sort of stuff too.
So get in quick.....the only thing he won't do now is make a new pushrod....if the damper rod is corroded or pitted, causing a leak, he'll simply recommend getting a replacement.
The common problem of the nitrogen leaving the bladder and mixing with the oil, over time, even if not due to an internal failure, is repairable, and any faulty valves or seals will be sussed and sorted during the process of testing.
Definitely do-able for a 900, hasn't tried an 850 He does do mail order if you sort out delivery and collection..... https://www.dunferml...orcycles.co.uk/
900 with better bits. Owes me nothing, Makes me smile

I've had my 900 shock serviced by Dunfermline Motorcycles. I phoned and established his and my connection with Chris as above, checked he's still active and arranged to call in. The workshop is less than 30 mins from my house.
Dropped it off Monday 17th Feb am., had a nice chat with Paul and a quick look at some old (very old) bikes he is selling for a former customer's estate. He called back Tuesday pm to say all done, all well. I collected Thursday. Straight re-gas and change the oil, no faults. £80.
Paul is a traditional m/c mechanic, involved in dirt bike racing, equipped with a workshop featuring lathe, milling m/c, welding kit, and more. If you want a service, get in quick, he's actively seeking buyers for the site, but intends to move some of the equipment to his shed.
I fitted the shock last week, finished the annual service yesterday, and went my first ride of 2020 today.
I can't say I noticed a significant difference, but my bum-ometer isn't the most sensitive, and the roads were far from challenging.
I learned that the gas is added by means of a needle thru' a rubber diaphragm behind the black plastic cap on the reservoir - just like Ohlins.
So, I'm pleased the unit has a clean bill of health after 45,000 miles and 10½ years. Just need the weather to stop being awful now!

Glad you got it done in time Steve. It's going to be a shame when they go. He was all ready to mill out the end cap and fit an uprated motorcross shaft seal to mine if he thought the original was past it's best. Do you remember the days when the world just worked and people did their best without simply trying to get more money out of your pocket and into theirs
