Hi my TDM900 battery may be on the way out, when pressing the starter button it

just clicks, however if I press it a couple of times the bike starts. I took the battery

out and charged it fully, when taken off the charger the voltage reads 12.48 volts

on the meter, is this OK or should it be 13+ volts?

Basically do I need a new battery? Cheers

Battery sounds fine, but you have the symptom of a dodgy connector or failing starter solenoid.

Hi, I've just had a perfectly OK battery (in the morning) let me down and be as dead as a dodo in the same afternoon - see recent thread. BUT your problem doesn't sound the same.

I've just checked my (new) battery and it showed 12.58 volts and started the bike immediately.

The clicking you heard is the main solenoid operating so I would check the main lead from the battery to the solenoid and then to the starter motor.  Check the connection of the RED lead from your battery to said solenoid (it's the box next to the battery). Then check the connections of the BLACK lead from the solenoid to the starter motor.

Riggers.

Probably also worth keeping an eye on how long the battery holds it's charge.

Thanks for all the reply's saved me getting a new battery, will check the battery wiring

as that was the fault on another bike I had, I did think the solenoid could be the problem

so I bought a pattern one the other day online and will fit it just in case, will update next

week as working away tomorrow, cheers bopster.

Could be the battery imho.  You should be getting way more than 12.48v on a full charge.  I'd be wanting to see at least 12.8v.

The theoretical maximum of a straight lead acid wet cell battery of 6 cells is 12.6V (2.1V per cell after a 24 hour rest following a charge). AGM batteries and other sealed batteries can settle at a higher voltage, but 12.5V isn't necessarily bad. I think My TDM900 battery is currently at 12.2V after 3 weeks of no use, but can still deliver the huge Amps required to crank it over,

OK. I changed the starter solenoid for the spare I bought, I had a bit of trouble getting the centre white plug out

pins were a bit corroded so cleaned them up along with the battery cables put it all back together, stuck the battery

in pressed the starter button and.....................it started right up with no clicking of the solenoid. So far so good, now

I did notice that the oil light on the speedo was staying on, did not have time to check oil level will do it on Saturday

but believe oil level should be OK? Anybody know if the white plug has any thing to do with the oil light? Cheers bopster

Oil's quick and easy to check. Make sure the bike is upright and warm. I think it's oil pressure light so might not just be the level.

White plug?

Glad your fix appears to have worked. Could have been the corroded pins but at least you know that is good and should be for some time.

Put the bike on the centre stand, checked the oil level which was OK, Pressed the starter button and

it started right up and after a couple of seconds the oil light went out..........Result  :o)

Next week it's MOT time!

TKH the white plug is the one that fits in the middle of the starter solenoid.

Cheers bopster

Yeah me too, think it may have been due to corrosion on the contacts as it now sports a new
starter solenoid and clean contacts it starts right up with no clicking.....bliss  :badgerrock: P.S. Passed MOT 😎
