Can you guys tell me why these wouldn't work as direct replacement for my '92 TDM 3VD carbs?  Jetted correctly of course...

These appear to be the same carbs our bikes use just set up jetwise for the cute little Ducati.  My concern is with spacing between carbs, linkage differences, floats, that kind of thing... Getting rusty on my carb knowledge...

Same carbs and set up. I've jst got a set of 40mm Mikuni TDMR40 flatslides for my TRX - originally for a Ducati and they go straight on  :pimp:

The throttle cable connections are opposite to the TDM carbs.  TDM throttle cables enter from the top side, not the float bowl side.

This is good info! I wonder if the OEM throttle cable brackets can just be swapped over?

Just swap the brackets from old carbs over?

Update: All indications are that the mikuni's for sale on ebay would function on the early TDM850. I skipped it though. Seached the Yamaha part numbers for the diaphragms, and carb kits, found www.motorcyclespareswarehouse.com.au had everything I need in stock for super cheap (relatively speaking)!
So genuine Yamaha spares are on the way airfreight from down under! Check these guys out. If my parts arrive OK, I'll be a convert. I'd about given up hope of finding reasonable parts prices for these old carbs.

Update Numero Dos:
Motocyclespareswarehouse.com.au shipped the parts I needed for the carbs airfreight. I got them in the US less than a week after ordering them. Pristine, new, Yamaha parts. Everything went really well. If anyone's looking for a source for early tdm carb parts, they seem to be the least cost alternative.

Will update this thread one more time once the carbs are back on the bike successfully mixing air and fuel.

Thx for the parts source !     I think I got ripped off-  paid $200 for full carb rebuild on this red '92 I bought in April (I don't have source in front of me).  Nothing was OEM or Yamaha parts.

BTW- AVOID  SPEEDSUPPLIES.COM     Its a scam.   I had my bank refund my $$ after waiting 3 weeks & no responses.

Boats.net is a great source for OEM Yamaha parts.  Maybe not the cheapest or quickest, but good prices for OEM stuff.  Shipping in the US takes several days though.
