Looking for some advice - i had some problems starting after doing valve shims on my Mk1 - so recheked valve timing and it appeared to be out a tooth -

i have now been trying to set valve timing but it still ends up being out once i rotate engine to check timing  - with the help of mate and a lever in the camshafts i can set the timing so that it appears perfectly in line - however once i put the tensioner in and rotate the engine to check it is out again

Now i have tried to offset but no matter what i still cannot get the timing lined up correctly - could my cam chain have stretched? Could it be wear in the cam chain guides?

tearing my hair out here!

anyone else recognise my symptoms?

Re-time it but advance/retard  opposite it by one tooth, depending on what your marks are showing .

Then very carefully rotate it  4 complete revolutions and recheck.

It will either be  a little better or MASSIVELY worse.

DO NOT FORCE rotation doing it this way.

Sometimes the marks never realign to factory marks exactly.....they do realign to what was previously showing though.

This is why many folk check it 2 or 3 times BEFORE disassembly.

The chain wear will accentuate this discrepancy.

Chain tensioner wear won't......by the time it's that worn the chain has already worn past excess.

EDIT; There is a limit in the factory manual for chain wear.

Hi mh1848!

Wise words of "wildbill", read and reread because it is correct. :good:  :clapping:

When I changed the chain of command of my motorcycle, brands did not line up exactly.

It seemed that a tooth was out. Installed new chain and marks lined up.

But do not expect pinpoint accuracy. :yeyeye:

In this topic, you can answer your question. See photo
