I wonder how a 19mm MC with non ABS brakes would feel, because it displaces more fluid for the same lever travel, but requires more force to do so

All 900 from 2004 had the 19mm MC not just the ABS which I think explains the lack of braking compared to the earlier models with a 14mm MC

Reading all this, you should check the disc isn't contaminated with oil or brake fluid, brakes on my 2002 Niner are fierce stoppers.

All right everyone, this is emberrassing a bit...but after a nice manly meal, applying real force I managed to pull the brake lever all the way to the handlebar, so there must be air in the system. I stand corrected.
You want it done right... Do it yourself, eh? Any tricks to the fluid change?
Guy who did it last time is a really experienced mechanic, dunno how he managed to screw it up.
We have cake, heated rooms and beds if anyone wants to help :D

Oh, and the clutch lever got a temp.fix using a thin washer, thanks for the tips!

Inject fluid in slowly from the bottom using a syringe starting with right hand caliper first. You will have to suck some fluid out of the reservoir. Discard this fluid. You want the nipple only just open.

If you have one of the suction oil extracor pumps they can help bleeding and fluid change by sucking the fluid through, just keep the reservoir topped up enough, I've used mine for bleeding the diesel system on my boat many a time after filter changes.

Amen to that !

It only takes a little bit of air, I splashed out on a full bottle of DOT 4 fluid and just kept pumping....it probably took about 200ml before the lever developed a solid resistance

Done mine lots of times, some of them extremely frustrating, reverse bleed as mentioned above is the best option me thinks and it's quick, tie back the lever overnight.

A real pain in the arse, I have had to suck and spit to get enough air out  :unsure2: - then tied lever overnight a coupla times. Worked a treat, though.

Would it have been better to just pay the mechanic in cash instead?

Will do it with syringe as suggested. Why do I want to tie the lever? And when is the time for that?

Once you've finished bleeding and closed the bleed nipples then tie back the brake lever over night, this will leave the hole in the MC open so any residue air can rise and escape, i usually have a stiff lever after bleeding but tie back anyway..

...and I have a tool like this, it just doesn't work as well as the "real deal".

If it were something I do often, I would probably investigate more.

All right, I did it, 2 hours spent crouching, cursing, and... It's much worse. Next step it's going in a shop, or I buy a fresh can of gas and make a nice little bonfire with it, not sure yet.

Well, seems like I'm not that bad after all, bleeding was done ok according to mechanic. He blames the too old brake lines, suggested going for fresh braided replacement.

You can check the hoses by clamping at the top and then clamping at the bottom to feel the difference.
Never seen a pipe do what you're suggesting without seeing the pipe swelling under pressure.

Having said that a braided set up should give you an improvement over 19 year old lines.
