Hi, been looking at getting a few parts for my 3VD, and there is a locally available 4TX being wrecked. As far as I can tell from parts lists the part no.s are the same (e.g. handle bars, front mudguard) except for the first bit being 3VD/4TX. So is it safe to assume they are the same?

Thanks for any advice

depends on the year , more recent the 4tx less parts compatible .

3vd versus 4tx  engine is similar expect for

cranckshaft and balancing weigths

camshafts

electrical part a bit different too

cdi not the same

wiring not the same  but can be changed to use on a 3vd  , 4tx uses 2 coils and 3vd uses 1

carburetors are different , if want to use a 4tx carb on a 3vd you will need the airbox filter from a 4tx

cooling system are diferent too

radiator small diferences

ignition barrel  different too

hope this help you

The 4TX bikes use some 3VD parts so you might find 4TX parts are specific for 4TX bikes.  Depends on what parts you're thinking of getting really.

Re. above, airbox is the same for mk1 and mk2 bikes, the airbox on the mk2a bike has wider outlets.

... the part no.s are the same... except for the first bit being 3VD/4TX. So is it safe to assume they are the same?...

No.

This site explains the structure of Yamaha part numbers.:-  https://thumpertalk....a-part-numbers/

That shows that the first bit (your 3VD / 4TX) indicate the first machine the part was used on. So logically the parts are not the same or the 4TX model's part would show as a 3VD.

The second bit identifies the part by its description (your handlebars...) and that number will be used for that part from any bke.

So all you are seeing as being the same is the code for the part, not its definitive model-specific version.

However, just because the part is not OE doesn't mean it won't fit!!! That's where the knowledge of folk here may help - but not me.

Honda has a similar system where the first part is the first model the specific part was used on, and threw up some useful sources of spares for my (pre-TDM) VFRs, and for my CBX now it is getting on a bit and parts are harder to find.
