Hi All from France,

I'm Spanish but living in Pays Basque, a nice region to ride :)

I just get a used TDM 900 2005 with apparently only 21mil kms in black. A nice bike.

I was searching for info in internet and get into this fantastic forum with a lot of info and posts. Thanks to owner to create this great community.

I will send some photos from my bike soon.

But unfortunately I have started with a bad experience. In theory all was fine with seller but after I get at home (after been riding 200kms) I discovered that there was a (maybe) severe problem with bike.

When it get hot, just before the fan start to work, the coolant expansion tank get all coolant out with booling water. Riding in highway routes there was no problem, no booling and temperature it's always ok but when I let the bike to get hot the problem arrive.

Im lost, the seller tell that for him it was working perfectly and never had any problem (he bought the bike on 10/2018 and sell it now... very soon) and it's really strange that the problem just started when I just bought the bike... I'm going to claim to the seller.

Also note that when the fan start the temperature start to down and never get on red but also I always have stopped the bike after the water booling started and I have not let radiator get empty.

Do you have any idea please ?, thermostat not working ? water pump ? head gasket problem ?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the mad house!

Have you topped it up at all? Did you check the level is not too full?

If it's filled right up it will always overflow when first heated up.

Hello and welcome. Also, you have 2 pipes connected to the top of the radiator, check to make sure they are in the correct position, the larger of the two connects to the lower fitting.  They often get swapped over after the radiator has been removed and re-fitted.

Thanks for your responses, the problem is that the water get lost from radiator, not only the expansion tank. The radiator don't have to be completly full of coolant ?

Before the water start getting out of expansion tank (and before fan start working) I see a lot of coolant bubbles (water booling) on expansion tank.

I attach some images.

Thanks!.

+1 check these two pipes.......Large pipe with wide clip goes to the lower connector, not the upper one. In your last photo you seem to have the pipe with the wide clip going to the top port, which is incorrect

This looks wrong. The pipe with the wide clip should go to the lower port, Yours in on the upper (non-pressurised) overflow port

Radiator should be full, expansion tank should have the space for expansion.

Studley & fixitsan look to be on the mark with those pipes being the wrong way round.

Good here innit!

Many of us have been there, or know someone who has......

It must have been a problem for the seller, unless their riding pattern was very limited.

Maybe tell them the dealer has fixed it for £100, would they be willing to pay half ?  (my Yorkshire roots are showing through ;) )

Hopefully it's not been ridden too much like it as if the head has been undercooled it could be prone to warping, may be worth doing a compression test if you get a chance.

They must have had it apart for something to get it wrong in the first place.

Edit: Just looked at the linked thread as valve clearance check makes sense for reason, sounds like others have run round like it and got away with it so you should be ok.

Yes, now I have a big doubt. Why, with only 21mil kms, they need to move the radiator ? in owner manual I don't see any maintenance work that need to move the radiator. So, the bike really have 21mil kms ? it's a way to know real kms rather the indicated on panel ? maybe with diagnosis or motor working hours ?

I have notice a code wrote in motor (see image) "by hand": Y548

Attached File  IMG_20190813_134617.jpg   87.32KB   0 downloads

This can indicate some motor work ?

Thanks!

If they've checked the valve clearances there's a fair change they took the radiator off, I can't remember what service interval the valve clearances are though.

Also changing the plugs is easier with the radiator dropped. I had to remove the hoses when I did mine at 15k miles.

If everything else is ok with the bike then maybe the previous owner is just useless. Make sure the oil is ok. I'd also check the swinging arm and the rear wheel adjusters. Check the chain while you're at it - should be 50-60 mm. If previous owner was that bad maybe he's not done these things right.

JBX's site https://www.tdm-yama...ex.php?page=CS1  will give you some guidance with those.

That was my first thought too. I just did valve clearances on Muddy's old bike today and double checked those pipes !
