It does seem to happen in every gear, but not when its resting and if you accelerate easily it does not do it. Only under heavy load. The only thing it does at rest is backfire/caughs, and that is only at idle. This really only happens when driving and with a load. Which makes me think its something in the driveline as no matter how much you rev it at rest, it will not do it.

I like the idea of the clutch going out or slipping. That makes sense. How would I be able to check this or repair this?

The HT Lead/boots/plugs were just replaced as I thought that may have been an issue (it did it before the change as well) and the battery cause that was going bad as well.

I do not have to stick it back into gear so that must not be it. There is no way it can slip while in gear?

Clutch is fine. Wall held up as well. Bike stalled when clutch was released in 5th gear against wall.

Take it out on the road a give it some welly!

Don't s'pose it's the rubber blocks in the back wheel being worn out?!?! Can't remember what they're called right now dunno.gif
I had a similar issue and it turned out they were worn out and when pulling hard it felt like a jump out of gear...

Sorry to harp on about the front sprocket but did you actually remove the nut and inspect the sprocket/shaft splines ?Also, are you sure the drivechain isn't too slack ? Maybe try reducing the slack a tad ? unsure.gif
Yea... its plenty tight and the splines are in great condition. Dont think there is anyway it could skip on the sprocket. Both chain and sprockets are relativity new as well. Ill try the slack but I think it is well within spec.

Under quick acceleration or heavy load (only when accelerating) the bike seems to "skip" out of gearWhat happens immediately afterwards? Down a gear? False neutral? Neither (still in gear).Do you have to put it back in gear, up or down? Can you reproduce this at will on the throttle?Worse in any particular gear compared to others?
Can be reproduced pretty much at any time while riding. It does not really "Skip" out of gear, it just skips... when you lay off the throttle you are back in the same gear and have power again. It is pretty much a momentary lack of power, but much different from hesitation. I can try and film this happening if that will assist at all?Same in all gears I feel like.

Hi Alex

I had a similar problem on my 850. Bike idled ok, cruised relatively ok but kicked like F**k when under load and/or accelerating. The problem appeared all of a sudden ( after a quick stop on a short ride out) and took some time to sort. Cleaned and checked carbs. Pulled plugs. Pulled coils and HT leads, replaced leads and wrapped same with insulating tape. The problem seemed to get better and then worse as I tried different things however it turned out to be a dodgy coil pack. After a week or two of buggering around I went to a scrappers (unemployed) and got a similar set of coils (they appear to be common) and was allowed to fit and test before paying. €30 and a little work later it was back to normal. I would suggest, if you can, borrowing a set of coils and see if it makes any difference. It did for me laugh.gif
I have posted re this on Carpe before but not sure where ...any body?.. any body???

It does sound like you still have ignition or carb/fuel delivery problems to sort with, but in answer to your last question, yes. To check the cush drive in the rear hub to see if the rubber baby buggy bumpers are chewed up, pull the rear wheel same as if you were going to put on a new tire. When you remove the sprocket hub form the wheel hub you will see inside the 3 interconnected damper sets. They will also be displayed in your manual or they can be looked up online under rear wheel for comparison to what yours look like. http://www.stadiumya...ts?aribrand=YAM If they are chewed up and wedging only enough for normal power delivery, they will all need to be replaced.

Hi,

Sounds like you've got exactly the same problem as me, I haven't sorted it yet but am putting my money on either carbs or clutch. My 1st port of call will be the carbs as it just seems to drop power for a moment and then kick back in making me think that the carbs aren't responding to the heavy load quick enough.

Let us know how you get on.

So I kinda feel like an idiot... Not sure why, but I just realized that it only happens in 3rd gear...

I must have miscounted what gear I was in when it happens or I am just in 3rd gear more often than I thought cause it felt like it happened a lot.

So 3rd is slipping, what do I need to do to fix that?

Arrghhh! Sorry to hear that Alex. Yep, tranny rebuild. Perhaps a worn or missing engagement dog or at least a shimming is in order. More importantly is not running the bike to reduce other motor damage as there has to be some chewed metal in the oil. I'd drain the sumps and give the oil and filter a look for what you've got. Old school motor would be to pull it and split the cases, but perhaps this one can be accessed and comes out the back top tranny cover... ?

3rd gear slipping seems to be as a result of worn dogs n cogs. I replaced a damaged 3rd gear on my mk2 myself (least expensive option ) but it meant stripping virtually every engine component, splitting the casing halves and buying/ making a few specialist tools as well. Also took me a fair while to do the job.

You could try sourcing a complete bottom end in good condition, or mayhaps alter your riding style to help overcome the problem.

The 3rd gear is usually the only gear where slippage problems occur, the rest of the gearbox would probably last for many a year to come.

So many of you may have read my last post about my 1992 TDM 850 skipping under load. Well I have been able to isolate it to 3rd gear.

While ridding as soon as you shift to third, it "skips" but never stays out and you don't loose all power. It is still drive-able in 3rd, just wont accelerate fast since it is skipping.

Asked a guy at a local shop, who also has had a TDM and he said if it skips in 3rd it should be skipping in 4th and 5th too and that the clutch went out... I dont really buy it. I have done the bike against the wall clutch test and it dies.

It skips in no other gears and under heavy acceleration I pretty much skip 3rd and power through 4th, which has no issues at all, even with full power.

My question is: 1. What is wrong? and 2. How do I fix it?

Thanks

It is your gear dogs on 3rd. 100% gearbox/engine strip

Link to a similar issue

Wear in this area can give rise to all sorts of behaviour. Yours is definitely wear in the dogs/recesses that take the load through the gearbox once 3rd is engaged.

Ease off the power when changing from 2nd to 3rd and short shift asap to 4th before giving it a handful.

Do the rest in the Winter.
