Just done an oil change . I didn't have the new large and small  'O' rings for the filter cover but I thought the old ones would be ok to reuse. Er no, I'm wrong. Oil is now leaking from the cover.

Is there is some magic to the order of tightening the cover bolts ?    Otherwise I'm going to have to the job again with new O rings.

Just check you've nipped it up squarely as that's the only time i ever had a leak, have re-used the orings many times to be honest, just clean them up and give a real light smear of sillycone or red rubber grease, i cross tighten mine, i expect you know they only tighten to approx 10nm so assuming you've not overtightend and cracked the cover usually your good :good:

Put correct bolts in correct holes. Don't forget the collar. Don't use torque wrench if you can use the force. Jobs a carrot.

Thanks chaps for the useful replies.

A couple of follow up questions

1. Do you know which bolts go in which holes ?    I noted they were different when I took them out but may have mixed them up .

2. There are 2 bolts at the front where the collar and small o ring are, then 3 bolts round the large o ring end where the filter is.  In what order would you tighten them ?

3. By cross tighten , do you mean a little at a time ?

Thanks again

1. Sorry no, before putting oil in offer up the cover and fit bolts to find out which goes where, then redo with oil change.

2. I put one bolt where the collar and oring are and one at the furthest opposite point, snug up to hold the cover on then fit the other bolts.

3. Cross tighten, opposite of each bolt, yea do a little at a time, dont over tighten or you will crack the cover.

Drained the oil. Checked that the large and small o rings are in place. Checked the right bolts are in the right holes. Re-tightened very carefully and it is still weeping a little so I'll be getting some new o rings . However I've noticed that the sump gasket is also weeping just above where the large O ring sits and that leak probably accounted for most of the oil spatter I saw so I'll have to replace that too. I'll start a separate post for that.

Curses and it means I can't use the bike this weekend for the Welsh national rally which I was prepping it for.

If I recall correctly, I've had the same issue some years ago, so I had to scratch my head a little to fix it.

The oil filter element cover has 3 screws on the filter side and 2 screws on the collar.

The first screw set is threaded on the strainer cover, you have to tighten them as required - see above.

The second screw set (collar) is threaded on the crankcase, NOT on the strainer cover (it goes through both covers). In case you tighten them incorrectly, the strainer cover AND/OR the filter element cover may warp enough to get some oil leak.

(edit) I'm not quite sure about which screw set goes here or there, but the general idea is that some screw are threaded on the strainer cover, others are on the cranckcase.

Thank you chaps . This has been really helpful and I am pleased to report I have solved my problem. It was those two central 40 mm bolts that were the issue. Once I concentrated on tightening them first ( but not to the exclusion of the others ) and a little more than before I think ( touch wood ) I am now oiltight. Hurrah !!

BTW what poor design on Yamaha's part.  Every other bike I've had for longer than I'd care to remember has had  sensible screw on oil canister.

.......and while we’re at it, I assume the same is true for the 850 ? .....
I mean, specifically, the same length bolts, in the same positions ?

the relevance would have been apparent to me last year when, in ignorance,
I tried to put wrong bolts in wrong holes...............result?......snapped off bolt!

life saved by the estimable Mr Henty......who, as I recall, drilled out the ‘dead bit’.....
and supplied me with a set of stainless replacements......give the man a DSC.......

Yes but always do the Welsh in the pig as it is more of a challenge besides I usually have my daughter with me. I usually win the three wheeler award but they have deleted that award now maybe they decided that I had enough. :rotflmmfao:
