due to an amazingly comprehensive lack of understanding of the technicalities of the subject, I have been lucky to have gained great assistance from here with the above task ......90% there, but it has been suggested that I use a thin wire to pin85 on the relay from any switched live.......rear brake light switch is proposed, for proximity reasons....
Ive located a twin core black wire from the switch which, via a connector, goes into the loom with one thin brown & one thin yellow wire.....cant seem to decipher which one is the live.......confused by the colours !

1) which one do I splice into.......and how best to do it?

2) the relay I got has an integral 25A spade fuse.....the supplied wiring for the grips has an inline fuse in the non-earthed wire, which goes to pin87, and the thick wire to pin30 from the battery +ive also has an in-line fuse.......is there any problem with this setup ?.....and what amperage should the last named fuse
have .....

as ever....Im clueless, even after nursery ministrations from fixitsan, dapleb, and helpful others

Already replied to the other thread jiffy..how many threads do you want ya greedy sod.Same fuse as relay in battery line. Make them 15A..25A is over the top..hth

See pm jiff

.....not so much greedy, maybe, just uncomprehending.....and hence adrift......

although most of this stuff has indeed been covered on a previous thread, the two points which simmer un-addressed
(see above) would be wonderful to have clarified

to whit; have I identified the correct location to connect to pin85, and if so, to which wire , yellow or brown ?

and is the multiplicity of fuses a problem (though thanks, If I understand the answer to be ‘all OK like that’ and 15A for both)

Save yourself the bother of a relay and get Oxford HotGrips. They switch themselves off when the ignition is turned off or the battery volts get too low. i.e. the relay is included in the unit's controller.

Morning jiff, just in case you read greedy sod out of context it was a leg pull. Everything you want addressing is 100% explained in the other thread before this thread was started. Too long to type up again. Thread title was "wiring". And as I said in the last post see the pm I sent you yesterday. Good luck with it....

.......thanks for that, Steve......unfortunately, the model of Oxford Hot Grips
which I have acquired,.....& fitted (superglue as per instructions),.....
.......DO NOT switch themselves off with the ignition........pity!
hence the need for a relay in order to circumnavigate the problem

OK guys.......no names, no pack-drill, no finger pointing;

no disagreement over pins 30 (to battery +)
& 87 ( to red +ive wire on grips - black wire -ive on grips to earth)

but apparently conflicting proposals for;

pin86: either to earth.
or.
to brakelight fuse at fuse box brown wire
(existing factory brakelight fuse will suffice)

pin85: either to any switched live
(e.g. on rear brake light switch ).
or.
to earth

It may be that , in my ignorance, I am not aware that both of the above amount to the same thing
....if so, let me know (gently!)

sorry if everyone’s bored sh*tless over this topic.....I too just want to get it done

Try this for diagrams / info:-

The official DIN 72552 designation numbers for the relay terminals (and other vehicle connections) are specified here:-

Jiff, follow the diagram I mailed you. I've been an auto electrician since 1973 self employed since 1986. The earth is pin 85. Conflict arises because a normal 4 or 5 pin relay is not polarity conscious across pins 85 and 86 i.e. either way will do. BUT, if somebody picks up a diode enabled relay not knowing about the internal diode the pin orientation becomes critical and 85 has to be earth to avoid short circuit. You can use a normal relay, a relay with internal resistor or a relay with internal diode. Just ensure you use 85 as negative to avoid explained short circuit. Follow the diagram .
