Okay, problem solved.

Wemoto (who supplied the pads) were really helpful, and measured other pads they had in stock, which turned out to be the same as the EBC's, so had to assume problem lay elsewhere.

Decided to pull it apart again to investigate. Brakes are not something I'm prepared to take any chances with, I knew something wasn't right and was determined to get to the bottom of it. Not being confident of getting the seals out without damage, ordered another set.

Getting it apart, it was apparent that something wasn't right at all. The pistons had gone tight, didn't want to go further into the callipers, and were buggers to get out. Took the seals out, cleaned everything and polished the pistons again. Maybe my imagination but the new seals (from a different supplier) seemed ever so slightly looser, on a trial fit over the pistons, than the last set.

Got it bled, with the EBC pads fitted, up on the stand, spin the wheel - nice and free. Pads grab nicely and obviously are coming back off the disc, as the wheel now spins as I expect it to. Will give them another bleed once bedded in a bit, just for piece of mind.

Perhaps all aftermarket parts aren't equal.

Thanks for your input chaps.

Anyone on good terms with a Yamaha parts person and can ask for a OE set to be measured?

I know bugger all about niners but if yourself or somebody here has a factory manual it should list pad start thickness in the maintenance specifications section.......my 4TX manual has that information ( 5.5 mm pads all round on a 4TX )
I'd be surprised if the 900 manual omits the information you're after....hth

Good thinking, sir. I had not realised the specs. included that.

My 900 WSM says lining thickness 5.5mm front, 5.8mm rear.

Shame then that all the aftermarket folk quote the total thickness including the backing plate!
