Hi guys!

I have had the TDM850 2001 for several years now and have done several oil changes at home.

I always kept the oil in the level and I was never able to remove the amount of oil (3.5 l or 3.6 l with the filter).

I always took out a lot less + - 3l. On 10/08 I made a trip, in total 500 km round trip, to the family site.

The oil was on the level when I went. The day after I returned, I went downtown. When I returned, I checked the oil level, which was at the first mark / line. Still with the engine warm, I removed the top cover from the oil reservoir.

Remove screws 1 and 2 from oil bleed, as per manual. I "No" removed the oil filter. The bike remained with the 2 bleeding points and the top cover of the reservoirs, open at night. In the morning, the total oil removed = 1.8 liters only.
1) No abnormality was observed in travel, noise or heating.
2) There is no visible leakage, or oil dripping in the garage.
3) Level verified before and after the trip of 500km (difference of <- 200ml)
4) The old oil swirled about 6,000km.

I have to replace the new oil, because I intend to make a trip to the south of the country, for a total of 4,000km one way and return.
My question:
1) because only 1.8L of the total of 3.5L of oil left, if the level was checked minutes before?
2) Where is that oil, Lady Yamaha?
3) The manual says put 3.2l and run 5 to 6 times, check and complete.
4) contaminate the new oil ??
5) Excess oil ??

Please, has anyone had this experience?
Eternal doubt ?? :sorry:

Cheers!

Hi TKH!

Yes, in both points according to Yamaha manual. For several years I've done this. To be honest, yesterday I removed the oil filter cover as well. I bought a new oil filter. I'm thinking of putting everything together and putting the new oil in and finding out. However doubt remains. There were no stops in the trip (total) of 500km. It was in two 250km stages, accelerating well and the bike was perfect. If it had only 2l of oil, the engine would have overheated and broken. I remembered a post from Studley Ramrod and researched it. It reports on clogging, remains of gasket and cardboard in the oil circuit, but the photos are not appearing. I wanted to figure out how to remove the oil tank cap and see if it has screens / filter.

I can't see it being the same problem I had with cardboard blocking the strainer as I managed to drain all the oil out with the 2 drain plugs.  Basically, most of my oil was staying in the sump as the scavenger pipe filter was blocked.  I managed to remove the oil tank after removing the carbs etc to clean the scavenge pipe filter.  I also removed the sump and the oil strainer from under the engine and cleaned that.

Hi Studley!

Thank you very much for your prompt return. I'll start from scratch, as if it were a normal oil change. I'll put everything together and put the new oil on. Obviously I'll check if will not have excess. I'm going to take a test, running about 30km. If everything is okay, I'll see if I travel tomorrow to enjoy the rest of my vacation. In the future, I do not rule out the possibility of removing at least the oil tank for investigation. Remember, I did a maintenance post on the valve control head. It's been well over a year. Is there not some dirt, debris? :sorry:

Once again, thank you for your attention and contribution so that I can resolve my doubt. Thank you all for the attention.

I will give information about the evolution of the case and if the trip really happens.

Cheers!

Hi guys!

I installed the new oil filter and a new oring (smaller) filter cover. I put 3.5l of 20w50 mineral oil in one go. I did the test between my city, to the nearest city, totaling 42.10 km. The bike behaved very well. When I returned to my house, I made the measurement. The level was at the first mark. I completed another 100ml. The next day I traveled. After running 400km I made a new stop to fill and without looking at the oil level, I completed another 300ml. On the second day of the trip I rode another 100km, to know the sights of the city. I returned on 08/25/2018 and after 400km of road, I made a new stop for supplies. Again and without looking at the oil level, I put another 300ml. Again on the road I rode another 100km to get to my house. I checked the oil level and it was in the middle. Between the first and second marks.
Conclusion: I want to forget why I opened this topic.
1) Engine running normally, making you smile when you accelerate
2) Engine temperature, normal as always
3) average consumption 18.5km per liter
4) average of  750ml of oil, for every 1000km
5) I need to buy a Gopro Hero (3,4 or 5)
6) I need to buy a new phone so I can take pictures. Without having to discard photos. (Full memory)
7) Stretch / lengthen the length of my arm, or buy a self stick.
8) Buy urgent side bags, for luggage (aluminum chests becomes unfeasible = high cost)
9) I'm thinking of selling my 850 and buying a 900.

I had to put off the rest of the trip. I had problems at home and with my second car.

The rest of the trip will stay for the next vacation

Cheers!
