the last couple of weeks I have noticed a clunking from the front end when braking, usually as getting down to the last 10-5 mph. It sounds metallic and possibly spring like, I have check the head set bearings, triple clamps, fork lowers and even discs and brakes for play and clunks but nothing. even asked like MOT center to take a look and he couldn't feel anything untoward.

I am now thinking it could be the springs are just tired and moving in the tubes. I am needing to change the fork oil this summer so will check spring length then. Anyone else experienced this kind of noise, any ideas.

Also what the conciseness on replacement fork springs, I know there was a lot of talk on the RaceTech springs but it comes back to the fixed or progressive rating debate. I am not the fastest of riders preferring comfort as apposed to out and out handling.

Oh!  any good deals out there for Fork springs?

Cheers

TAM

A lot of peeps have reported clunking of front end on mkII and 9'er.  Think for someone it was even the run of the speedo cable through the guide.  Sounds loike ewe have already had a good brevot aboot for the problemo though.

Good luck with findin it.

No speedo cable on a 9'er. If only it was that easy.

I had a similar experience and it turned out to be the front sprocket needed replaced.

Check the disc bobbins between the disc and disc carrier. They wear and the disc moves. Not a big problem. Just sounds like one.

Noises here too and no MOT worries either. I think all of my FZRs used to do this as well, again with no issues.

I have fixed rate springs installed in my Mk2 front end after having lived with the original progressive option for 2.5 years. I picked them up from Rolfie as complete units.

The general feeling at my end is that the original progressive springs work very well (as they were intended to) and provide a greater deal of feel and a wider margin for error.

I'm a little wary of the fixed rate option I have fitted now.  <_< This maybe because my oil choice was wrong when I blinged them for the first time or their action doesn't correspond to my riding style and expectations. They aren't the answer to everyone's gripes that's for sure. I like to spend more time riding the bike and less time braking, so fork dive is less of an issue say, than securely burying the front end into a corner.

Currently I can't push as hard as I dare, because it feels like the new arrangement is likely to exceed it's limit sooner. i.e. NEED MORE FEEL

I'm working on a solution. Hopefully find it this Summer.

I'd happily bolt in another pair of original options.

There, hopefully saved you some dosh.

Did you put everything - spacers etc. back in the correct order when you changed your fork springs ?

It has been known to get it wrong - causing clunking  - ask Gaz on CMC  ;)

I have not changed the springs yet, I have change the oil about 2 year ago but made sure everything went back in the way it came out. Also the noise has just started in the last few weeks.

Every bike I have owned has clunked with the exception of a 900 Monster.

I have give up on that one years ago :unsure2:

Are the discs and pads ok? I take it you've checked the bolt is torqued up properly?

Clunking noise on the 9er usually comes from the top head bearings : free play needs to be adjusted (procedure fully explained inside the workshop manual, nonetheless not a very easy task).

While you're at it, put molybden grease in excess on upper & lower head bearings, it always helps...

I was wondering where these springs had come from and you may have helped me out by mentioning RaceTech.

Not the answer to everyone's gripes; Not without some serious experimentation and testing, that's for sure.

Originals are the obvious bolt in and forget option.
