I lived in Edinburgh for a long while, and I'm now about 15 miles west. It is a known problem, many city hotels lack decent parking.
One of this forum's members Pabroon has I think had every bike stolen or an attempt at theft made, even with the bike parked in good visibility, in and around Edinburgh.
I'm sure there's a lot more to it than just a few kids stealing bikes...things of this nature have to be well organised, people in hotels passing on info about when bikers are staying there and so on..... I have to stress that this is just speculation though. It's a shame too, Edinburgh is a great place to visit.
My daughter works at Saltire Motorcycles, the place mentioned in the story and I wasn't even aware that they offered secure parking......I knew about their cafe, barbers shop and tattoo parlour (seriously they do !), but not the secure parking !

Fair play!
We visit Edinburgh a couple of times a year as my son and his wife live there. We're hoping to go up on the bikes next year and parking the bikes has been a huge concern. For the sake of peace of mind, I think we'd leave them at Saltire bikes. Good to know.

I hadn't a clue Edinburgh was so bad with bike theft until I read that story on ADV rider, My mate Steve does street photography in a big way and is hardly ever away from Edinburgh, I'll have to ask him where he parks his RT???

Have you heard of Chris Scott? I've had his Adventure Motorcycling book for yonks and when doing research on the CB500x found a website by him with loads of good stuff about various bikes. He even tried to Tenere up a TDM 900.

No point stealing a bike if you can't sell it on. Thieving won't reduce until they stop breakers selling frames with a V5C. Swap everything over, take the frame and reg off SORN. Sell the stolen bike. Dvla won't check anything.
These little cnuts just torch them! I'm a member of the Scotland against bike crime Facebook page and a list of over 20 known Edinburgh school age bike thieves appear on it. Out of the 20, there's at least 6 names I know from working in the College - these cnuts are mainly still at school (when they attend) . Now I have the names I can get access to their addresses - there's going to be big trouble in the Capital very soon, the police can't do anything and the cnuts know that.
Just last week I'd a little lesson with a class who were boasting of bike thieving. I told them about the "list" going around and that there are bikers who are so angry about it that they'll be taking the law into their own hands and wouldn't think twice about taking an iron bar across their fingers so hard they wouldn't be able to touch their cocks for a year - that got a bit of a startled reaction
Good to hear that the German girl got sorted out - it does restore your faith in human nature

Well done to everyone looking after her.
Me and Mandi stopped just out side Edinburgh a couple of years ago, more by chance as the cost of accommodation was much cheaper. Having a bike stolen would have been devastating for us, worst still being abroad.

Nah, he's a lot further south.

To be honest I'm surprised we haven't started to see more vigilantism over the last few years. The police are now so under resourced I very much doubt they're able to put much effort in to investigating non violent crime, despite lots of people knowing very well who's responsible in a lot of cases.

In this day and age, when you can end up in prison for hurting someone's feelings...hey wait a minute, under resourced you say!
