I do hope Yamaha address any issues (if annie arise) these boikes may encounter as they sell more units and ownership increases.

It always amazed me that quite a few TDM900's left dealerships with poor running issues which were either fixed by diligent owners  (with particular credit to Carpe & JBX) who percy veered and were patient and willing to spend some more money and time fettling with power commanders, airbox mods, zorst systems etc to fine tune their chosen steed.

Some of the results are it seems quite impressive be it with or without expendy-ture.

I do however remember some owners buying new and used 9ers and simply chopping they back inn after a couple of weeks and losing a small fortune and buying a new Honda/Suzuki etc and having to take it on the chin as the dealers simply said 'thas part of the character' with those affected 900's.

I fir one would stihl happily buy a 900 and spend some time and money fine tuning it,  but if it was a brand new one when they were stihl available i wouldn't be too impressed to say the least.

You make some very valid points there. I like vehicles that have a bit of character, whether that be bike or car, but to buy a new bike and have to spend money on it straight away to get it to run right isn't really acceptable. Character is one thing, not running right is another. In the case of the niner in particular, all of the running issues reported over the years can be tuned out relatively easily at no cost other than time, which, i  believe, should have been down to the dealer.

I haven't ridden any of the current crop of new bikes for some years as I really don't want to change my niner. It does everything I want it to, but I may be surprised how far things have moved on since buying mine 12 years ago. Is the new stuff really that much better?

Most of these issues with newer bikes are because of the more and more strict emission standards/rules. It is no easy job to design a performance engine that complies to the emmision/noise standards  :( It is especially bad when a bike is released complying to current standards and then have to comply to new more strict standards in the years after its release (which was the case with the 9'er).

One way to "fix" it, is with a Power Commander (or similar).

Even my new car (a Nissan) tends to bog down a little when accelerating hard from a stand still. This is also caused by the restrictions due to the emission standards.

I'm with Wicky on this.  It's some of the more obvious 'faults' that must be annoying for owners of noo steeds.  The Versys with it's vibrating engine which resulted in later models having rubber engine mountings is one example.  How on earth could they not notice that before they put it up for sale ?

Not sure I totally go for it being difficult to make a performance engine that meets euro regs and hence the problems, although it must be a challenge. But if that were so then all new cars/bikes would be bogging down.  I think they're just keen to bring out new models without thorough evaluation. Shirley it can't be too difficult for some of the best engineering designers in the world to design the thing properly. :unsure2:

And they made it through the final day of the Abu Dhabi test without breaking down once - apparently they were baffled by the reliability...seriously!

Power commanders and remaps seem to be the order of the day. That might reflect the manufacturers poor response to Euro 4 and the like, and that some like to spend money on their bikes, anyway. All I want is a throttle that smoothly reflects the turn of my hand without jumps or bogging down. Yam should have learned their lesson from the initial MT-09 problem, and then the Tracers and XSRs ought to be ok. Introducing QM....(?)

Yeah. My tame racing mechanic recently scored a damaged repairable R1 which he is setting up for road and track. He's using a power commander and some sort of diagnostic programme to de-choke the motor. It's not rocket science apparently, they are just following the prompts from the diagnostics to tune the bike and it's resulting in a big difference in performance and usability. He's quite amazed by it.

This shows why the EU wanted to stop us meddling with our bikes. But I don't see what the gain for the choking bureaucrats is though when we could all buy bikes with big engines that do 28mpg (and might be inclined to do so soon). It's one of those pointless exercises where being seen to be doing something is of utmost importance to them, and a crying shame for us. Sadly the EU will hold sway on world biking,IMO.

For those among us too jerky on the throttle, a good fix is to add a capacitor on the TPS line to smooth-out the signal going to the ECU.

Start experimenting at around 1µF, don't go too high or you'll get a HD.

Cheaper than a PC3.
