Howdy All,
Not actually a TDM owner yet but seriously considering it, I'm going to look at one tomorrow which the seller assures me is a sound bike. . .except . . it has a backfire on decellerating which is worse when the engine is cold so I'd be grateful for any advice on this or any other matters that I should bear in mind when viewing the bike (specific to the TDM). I currently ride a Suzuki TL1000S and these are famous for backfires but it's nearly always a perished gasket on the rear cylinder exhaust causing an air leak.
Thanks in advance good.gif

Hi Shaggy,

Standard pipes or aftermarket. Small air leaks round the joints can cause a backfire. Nothing to worry about as far as I'm concerned.

I had a bit of backfire on my 2001 TDM; I then noticed the exhaust (Motad Nexxus, which seem to be made of pressed chocalate-bar foil wrapper), where header and silencer meet up there was generous free play and blowing. Got meself two car exhaust clamps from Halfords (45 mm iirc but better measure), tightened them up (not too tight obviously, given the made-in-Albania quality of the Nexxus pipeworks) using a bit of locktite on the bolts: job done!

Sorry, didn't give all the info. The bike is a '93 with road legal Motad cans and has covered 30k miles (alledgedly- doesn't seem much miles) I guess I'll know better when I've seen it, thanks for the info and fingers crossed that it's a good 'un. I'll let yall know.
