My RAC Personal Breakdown Cover dropped through the door today and at just over £105 I thought it was a bit on the pricey side.

So I did a bit of a search on t'internet and found Green Flag would knock 30% off any genuine RAC or AA Personal cover quote (50% for other types of cover), but the procedure to get it was a bit faffy.

So with the offer on my screen I rang the RAC and asked them to match it, and to cut a long story short (after having to listen to 10 minutes of them telling me how much better the RAC are than Green Flag) I was offered 15 months cover for £88. Result!

Worth a 10 minute call I reckon.

Riggers.

I use Tesco Clubcard points; makes RAC cheap as chips at approx 1:3 ratio.

That's worth knowing Steve. I'll be saving up my points from now on instead of putting them in the petrol tank!

Just digging up this thread from last year as I've been saving my Tesco Clubcard vouchers all year to use them to renew my RAC membership. My reminder came through yesterday and the quote was £89.99 with a free upgrade to key recovery OR free onward travel.

So, clubcard vouchers are supposed to be worth £3 for every £1 voucher, so you'd think I'd need £30 worth of vouchers, yes? Well No it don't work like that.

If I want to spend vouchers to renew my membership it can only be done online which forces you to obtain a new quote from the RAC. And my £89 renewal suddenly becomes nearly £150, and needs almost £50 in vouchers. And no mention of the free upgrade.

Or put another way I now need £50 worth of vouchers for membership costing £89.99. That's NOT £3 for a £1 voucher but only £2 .

I mean I'll probably still go ahead but the little tinkers always want their pound of flesh don't they!

I'll ring them tomorrow but don't expect to get anywhere.

Good luck with that. Reminds me that my AA renewal is not far away. I am already on over £200 so that needs attention. I may well join you at the RAC. My daughter changes from one to the other each year.

It's always worth going online and getting a better quote and then (in your case) ringing the AA and seeing what they say. I've usually found both AA and RAC will always better each other's quotes. You've nowt to lose really!

I rang Tesco today and told them my tale of woe and they said they couldn't comment about RAC pricing but were happy to refund my vouchers.

I agree. Always phone. I said elsewhere that I phoned in on two consecutive days and each call got me more off.
