Hi everyone, I am glad to be part of the forum!
I recently rescued an old '92 TDM out of someones storage. It has been sitting for about 10 years and in need of some serious love!

I spent about 250$ (180usd) on the bike as-is.

Gas tank had a fair bit of rust in it, so it is currently soaking in vinegar in my basement. It will get a sloshing of alcohol and then marvel mystery oil to keep it from re-rusting.

Im starting this thread to track and keep up with my progress in getting this old girl road ready again.

Heres what I know so far:
The good:
-front fork is in good shape, seals and springs are like new
-engine is clean with only minor seal cracking. No seeping.
-electrical all works and looks untouched
-bike is complete with all parts and plastics

The bad:
-rust in gas tank
-all fluids and filters need changing
-possibly need carb rebuild
- unsure of internal engine condition
- unsure of tranny condition
- brakes need love
- needs new battery

Some pics:

Nice find!

That looks like the original exhaust, so check where it goes 2 in to 1 as they tend to rot there.  Re. engine internals, as you're probably aware if you've read up them, they do have a tendency to use a fair bit of oil, so some people do let it get too low and cause some problems. Also check the front sprocket is tight, they can come loose.

@chris
The bike doesnt have a 2 to 1 exhaust. It has 2 seperate pipes all the way to the engine. The bike did come with an extra 2to1 pipe though (not installed). But from what I can tell the pipes seem to be in good shape as the bike was stored indoors thankfully.

I imagine the front sproket is loose as the chain is sitting pretty slack right now.

I am going to find some oil for it in the next day or two. Any reccomendations?

Chain adjustment is on the slack side, 30mm-50mm if memory serves but someone with more neurons may correct me.

Oil, 10w30, Jaso Ma. They don't need expensive full synthetic.

The bike will have two drain bolts...

Good find, welcome and enjoy.

Chain slack is 40-50mm so don't be too keen on tightening that there chain.

This looks like the startings of a great thread. Good luck with the fettling.

The bike in its current unrunning state has the chain resting on the swingarm. Id assume that is too slack?

That is slack if it's sitting on the swinger BUT dont adjust it too tight 40-50mm only, if it's been sitting so long i would pull the carbs for a clean otherwise you may end up pulling your hair out later with running issues, nice find though, good luck.

Quick Update-
Had the gas tank soaking in vinegar for past 4 days. Drained it out tonight.
It did a good job but not fun getting all the nuts out...

Quick before and after:

Original pipes go 2 in to 1 in to 2, so I guess there's something aftermarket in the middle then as the pipes look standard.

That's a hell of difference to the tank!  Hopefully none of that sludge got through in to the fuel tap and pump.

@chris
I will take a look but you are probably right about it being stock. I saw 2 pipes coming out the engine and 2 pipes on the back of the bike and just assumed they never joined. I do have a spare exhaust for the bike so im not too concerned if it is rotten.

When I first started cleaning the tank I couldnt get fluid to pass through the inergal filters inside the tank. Now they flow freely. I too hope the engine hasnt been too badly contaminated.

@wicklamulla
Can you elaborate what you mean?

He means the plastic bungs that cover the swing arm bolt and one of the engine mounting bolts above it, very rare to seem them still on the bike :D

Update on the build-
Got back at the bike today. Biggest thing checked off the list is we popped the plugs and turned the engine by hand to make sure it wasnt seized. Engine turns so I thing we got a viable project.

The plugs I pulled where gross. Corroded on top and sooty down below. They where dry and the gap on them measured perfect. I assume they are sooty due to the bike eating oil. I replaced with new ones.
20190119-212729.jpg 20190119-212714.jpg

I drained all the old oil out of it. Replaced the filter and orings. Only about 1.5L of oil came out. Will be dumping 4L of fresh stuff in tomorrow.

Drained all the coolant out. After sitting for 10 years the coolant had seperated. All the glycol and coolant was in the rad/ pump/ engine and it looked like all the water had risen to the reserviour where a bunch of alge had started to grow. Going to give the coolant system a garden hose flush tomorrow too. Took the reservior off to to tank inside and clean.

I pulled the drain plugs out of the carb bowls and drained them out. Gas in there was gross and orange, but free of any particals. Tomorrow I will be pumping a couple cans of carb cleaner through the carbs, would love advice on where you think I should input the cleaner? Through the main fuel line input maybe. Just shoot it up through the drain hole?
20190119-204426.jpg 20190119-204417.jpg

I replaced a bunch of fuel line too. Took the petcock off and cleaned it. Seems to be working fine now. Still have a bunch more hose to replace.

Tomorrow I will put in new coolant, oil and a battery and hit the starter and see what happens. Also plan on tanking a look at the front sproket tomorrow. Even if it starts its going to need some considerable more love to be road worthy.

Wish me luck!

Just checking, you drained oil from 2 drain points, not just one ? I think you need to check the manual for the location of both plugs....unless  you already have in which case  i wonder how noisy it was when it last ran with so little oil ! :)

What mileage did it do before it's long rest?

As mentioned above 1.5l is the classic 1 drain plug mistake. Hopefully it is a mistake else ewe might have knacked LHS burrings.
