Last time I used a lathe the metalwork teacher gave me a thick ear for chogging it up. Went it too heavy apparently, never got the chance to use the lathe again after that so it was back to making bottle openers with a hacksaw and file.

I got a hard smack round the lughole off me dad at 10 years old for taking off .001" too much, on an old lathe that read cross slide movement not dia. So 1 thou on slide was 2 thou off diameter.
The part just fell through the bearing scrapping the job Thankfully modern lathes are much easier to use.
Learned one thing that day, you can't put the metal back.

Many years ago lathes, grinders, presses, drills and milling machines was how I earned my living. In the end I was a setter/operator on a grinding machine making lawn mower parts up in Ipswich for Ransom, Simms and Jefferies. So I read drawings, machined the parts and somehow got the parts passed by inspection. There's a frightening thought if you happen to own a RS&J mower
