Thanks to all. Had a great day and the Lovely Mrs TeDeum made me a suitably gooey cake. We couldn't afford the full compliment of candles due to my great age.

I thought the advantage of getting older was that the cakes had to get bigger to accommodate all the candles?
There is still the candle cost to us pensioners to take into account. I was thinking of crowd funding the cake for next year.

I'm new to the pensioner game in Ireland. I'll look into it for the fuel allowance next year! What we do get is free travel (for the pensioner and his carer!) on busses and trains. We get one bus a week in Castlegregory and the last train was in 1946 so probably won't abuse this. I had a friend who was a retired, wealthy businessman who, with his wife, drove his Merc to the station in Limerick twice a week and took the train to Dublin to do a little shopping and drink a coffee before returning home.
