Well for me it's because Google is free, they're supporting LINUX.
I don't like Apple like I don't like Microsoft, both big money hungry corporations, yes I know Google is too but Google is taking a different approach to provide the masses with free stuff (paid for by advertising).
Google wanted all Android phones to be free, or at least very heavily subsidised by advertising, but the phone networks wouldn't have it. But still you can have Android on any manufacturers phone, Apples iPhone is closed.

Google uses Linux as the basis for Android and also support Linux in various other ways. But Google, and especially Android are not free in the way Linux is. It is free as in beer but not as in speech. For a number of reasons:
- the Google applications are closed source. You cannot re-use their code, you cannot deliver them with your own homebrew version of Android. Android itself is fully open source though.
- the manufacturers Google cooperates with for Android all deliver their phones with slightly modified versions of Android. If you want full control of your own phone you still need to root the system.
That's why I am eagerly awaiting Meego, the cooperation between Intel and Nokia. It is fully open source and will run on anything from smart phones, over tablets, netbooks, TV's and in vehicle infotainment systems.
Also, even Google being free as in beer is debatable. You are still paying them. Just not with money, but with personal information.

Just bought a new battery for my HTC P3600 (Orange M700) 4 years old and the battery finally gave up. Less than £10 for a new battery and fitted easilyby sliding the rear cover off.
Now how much to get a new battery fitted on an iPhone?????

Here's my final (probably!) tu'pence worth. Go to a phone shop and have a play with an iPhone, Desire, Defy etc and pick the one you like the look of most. You'll be happy whichever you get! They're all excellent phones and do mostly the same things. Apple, HTC, Motorola etc are all great big companies....I don't believe any are evil and none would be in the slightest bit worried if I did. Some are just much better at promoting their products than others.
Look at the cost obviously. If you're an ipod user already, the switch to an iPhone will be very slick.
Don't buy the phone from the shop though. Much better deals normally online. Go through Quidco for some really good cashback deals on top of whatever the seller offers you.
Enjoy whatever you get.............if it's the Defy, let me know how you get on!

LOL
I'd have one any day if I could afford to buy a new model every year
Serious, there easy and simple to use and Aint that expensive when you compare it to a windows running alternative. (the desktops that is)
I'd have an iPhone too if I could have a phone for the weekend and mine i use for the week. I wouldn't be so jealous if I could afford some of the stuff !
