Hello everyone.
Few hours ago I got myself into little accident and as a result my clutch cover plate got a new whole in it sad.gif

Little oil got out, while the bike was on it's side, so the question is, if general oil level is OK,
can I carefully drive to the shop for repairs or I need an evacuate it with a track?
My guess was that as long as no oil leakage I can carefully drive (it's about 15-20 minutes away).
Please help me understand what are the cons of driving like this, even for a short distance?

What a bummer

Besides the issue of oil coming out of the fracture, which I suspect it will once the clutch basket starts spinning round and whipping up the oil, I think my main concern would be possible contact of the clutch basket with the metal that has been pushed in. This may result in abrasion between the basket and the case, machining off fine particles of alloy which could the circulate around the engine doing untold damage.

If in doubt, bottle out.

I would transport the bike home and repair it at your own sweet pace.

I'm sure other opinions will follow. Ignore them if they suggest riding the bike home !!

I can't really tell how bad the leak is from the picture but I'd think the clutch plates spinning around would force the oil out of the hole and you'd run out of the stuff fairly quickly. I'm erring on the side of caution here, only you know how bad it is but I'd say best not to ride it. Hope the rest of the bike fared better sad.gif

Edit: Snap! I hadn't thought about the bend casing touching the basket, good point. Best not to even run it then!

I can't see through it, but it doesn't look too deep, but point taken, cheers.
any other thoughts?

Bad luck DrGre, i hope the scratched (or is it dented?) frame doesn't lead to the bike being 'written off'.

Thats a bit of bad luck! I had a friend who lost his chain at speed which knocked a big hole out of the clutch cover... He filled it in with an industrial quality version of jb weld, and did some fine sanding and it works without a problem for many a moon now... I guess you could always get a new one though. BTW definitely dont ride it. I have my motor apart at the moment, and I can tell you its not much clearance under that cover. It will probably do just exactly what dave suggested.

Yep, bad luck indeed sad.gif
But thanks for support and advises! A lot of useful info when you need it most.
I don't think I will ride it after all said above. Thanks again.

@Bobman13,
I'd love to, but I don't believe it's same part number, and I'm not sure it'll fit, since such a big difference between the engines.

Well, the bike is in the shop for now, since they out of stock of clutch covers (and it'll take awhile till the new one arrives),
I think I'm gonna go for temporary solution and try to weld it maybe, of course I'll need to make sure nothing sticks out from the inside.

As you could see I got my right footrest got trashed as well (I suspect that the whole in the clutch cover comes from it, that got caught between the cover and the ground).
Do you know which models of riders footrests will fit a niner?

P.S. In case someone looking for front brake lever, you may check one of the listed models, that should fit as well:
FZ6-N 04-05
FZ6-NS 05
FZ6-S 04-05
MT03
BT1100 05-06
FJR1300 03-05
FJR1300 A 03-05
XJR1300 04-05
BT1100 05-06
FJR1300 03-05
FJR1300 A 03-05
