Hi top of Thelwall viaduct on the M6 purple nasty (1995 3VD) dies.

Done about 130 miles on a tank of fuel and it felt like it was going onto reserve.

Pulled over turned to RES and attempted to restart/bump start but no joy.

RAC man (y reg tdm owner !!) couldnt fix it Tried gallon of Petrol, Im gettings sparks but no joy.

Got it home dismantled and attached tank directly to carb with extra pipe and held it up above carbs to give gravity feed and it fired up and ran a treat!!!!!

That weird fuel pump thing under the seat with no wires (vacumn driven ??) is it possible to fix it ?? or is it a bin job.

The vacumn pipe looks in ok nick no tears etc as far as i can see with a torch tonight.

So pump fixable ?? any other possibilities ???

Please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there are 3 pipes going to the vaccum fuel pump
1 to tank, 1 to fuel tap and 1 just infront of the carbs, thats the vaccum line
you wont be able to see any leaks in it, even if its got a great big split dry.gif
if its hard (as in cant easily make a dent with your fingernail) chances are it needs replacing

havin said that, the vaccum fuel pumps do occasionally die, but its more likely to be the hose (i've replaced hoses twice now but still on the same pump at just shy of 100k miles)

2 of the fuel hoses are hard and im going to change them all - looks like 6mm inside diameter bore pipe (got some 8mm on shelf fir my old gsx 1100- oh well)

But the vacumn pipe looks ok its still v soft. Ill remove and do a proper check tomorrow.

If its the pump can it be fixed or is it a bin job and hope someone is selling one.

Also the standard clips appear to be 2 big to clamp teh airbox to teh carb inlets any ideas ?? it practically fell off !!!

It might well have just been an airlock stopping yer bike from starting. I didn't catch the reserve on mine in time and end up stopping like you did, it took about 5 mins before I managed to get her fired up.

Might also be worth checking the fuel pipes are connected to the tap in the right place, they sometimes get put on the wrong way. I'm referring to the 2 pipes coming from the right side of the tap. The one with the wire wrapping should be at the bottom.

Here's a fuel pump I checked over http://www.carpe-tdm...o...c=15098&hl=

As far as I'm aware, the diaphragm's can't be had seperately.

Was that with the vac pipe connected up properly ?

Have you checked the fuel tank breather and the fuel tank filter ?

I've still got the fuel pump (spare) but I haven't tested it so I dunno if it works, but it looks ok. PM me yer addy details and I'll post it to you if you wanna try it out.

Hi - the new vac pipe goes from the take off on the left inlet round to the pump.

Ive taken the adapter off the bottom of the tank and cleaned it and replaced. Ive checked all the pipe routes etc when i did this and made sure that all the pipe were correctly plumbed to the correct points.

ive a day off work tomorrow and no wife or kids being a pain !! so i will have a go at taking the pump apart and i will remove the carbs abd see what is happening there also.

May take the opputunity and bash the credit card and see if the emulsion tubes are bad.

Ill report back on the gripping drama tomorrow !!!!!!

Thanks all !!!

Fit an electric fuel pump from an R1 and say goodbye to all the palaver of air locks when you don't switch to reserve quick enough with the vacuum fuel pump. Done it myself and what a difference it makes!

Currently having a similare issue just that I've already replaced the lines and the pump seams to work fine just that the bike will idle all day long but the moment you blip the trottle it wants to die, Replaced the HT leads, Emulsion tubes, Rectifer, and needles any help woud be great. Not sure if its the pump but ya never know?

easiest way to tell if its the pump is to bypass it, if the bike runs fine without it then its the pump, the lines to/from it or the vaccum hose

have you checked fuel heights as per the manual?
what colour are the plugs?
whats the spark like? big and blue?
what exhaust system & airfilter have you got?
what clip are your needles on?
what size main jets?

hi - i held the tank up above the carbs and ran a pipe direct and it worked that way.

I took the pump apart and it seemed ok clened some gunge and put a small amout of red hylomar sealant on teh two faces exposed put it back together and re plumbed it all and it ran but on on one cylinder. Checked sparks and ok !!

Bit the bullet and took the carbs apart and there was enough crap in there to grow potatos !!!!

One lump (the main offender) was holding up the float hence running on one. It now runs pretty well but i still cant get the airbox to fit the carbs.

The carbs have whirte paint/writing on them like they are second hand what should the carb inlet diameter be ??? any one know i had a look around but no answers.

So current state of play i need new emulsion tubes. I need a air box that fits and i still dont know if i have the correct main jets in as i wrote down the wrong number i wrote down the number on the screw in jet next to it doh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any one got a decent airbox for sale with the correct clips ?? - Cheers !!

1995 is a 3VD bike and MJs are 142.5 as standard
unlikely they've been swapped for another size, cant remember exactly but 35or 36 mm i fink

airbox rubbers go hard over time, if they aint been replaced in the last couple of years chances are you'll have to replace em
to get ya back on the road you can try the old 'boiling water' trick to soften em up and fit em back, ya gotta be quick tho coz they go 'ard again very quickly

is it possible to fit the rubbers then fit the airbox on top ??

the clips to secure the airbix to the bell mouths are too big and dont clamp up. Are fowlers the only answer for these ??

Erm, MJ is 140. The OD for the carb inlets is 60mm. There should be a number printed on the carb beginning with 3VD.

You can't fit the rubbers to the carbs first as they need to be sealed onto the airbox and they are actually more like a pipe bend with the rubbers on the end.

Purple Nasty lives !!!!

New emulsion tubes, New carb airbox rubbers, cush drive rubbers, spark plugs, oil, new thermostat housing oring and coolant and a cleaned and re-assembled fuel pump with an in line fuel filter (carbs were filthy !!) and it lives again.

Done 50 miles tonight no probs need to run it onto reserve and prove it can be restarted.

Just got to keep an eye and charging and its now running so smooth and quiet i can here the valve gear noise now (sag!)

But its running !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - PHEW !!! thanks to u all for your help !!

Purple nasty died again today. Same scene. Went onto reserve at 148 miles forgot it was getting close and it started to cut out on the motorway. Started spluttering, I deftly switched to reservebut it refused to fire again and just glided to a stop.

Tried breify to start on the button after 2 mins but no joy. Had to push 3/4 mile to Burtonwood services (frank thomas aqua pore kit is very warm when pushing a tdm !!) filled up with fresh go-go juice but no joy after much fiddling and trying it fired on 1 cylinder but wouldnt rev at all it just stalled. played with teh choke to make it tickover faster and after 5 mins running like this it slputtered into life. Rode round the carpark for a bit without issue to cool it down then rode on to work late. It seems as others have said the standard crappy pump wont clear a vacumn lock with a low fuel level. Once running it runs really well now after my previous issues.

Question. Do others have this game whener they go onto reserve ?. IS my pump cream crackered ? if so whats best find a standard that may work for a while or go for it and fit an early R6 leccy fuel pump with relays etc. Is the R6 the best bet or will others fit ? - mainly something cheaper. R1/R6 stuff keeps its price on Fleabay. FYI ive a set of 4 pot early GSXR front calipers in good nick to trade just a chance someone may want to trade odd swap i know.

Thanks for your continued help guys.

PS Guy in the car park at work said he flogged his transalp and was looking for a TDM but couldnt get a nice 1 for reasonale cash and ended up with a cbr600. He said he was jealous. rolleyes.gif
