Ok it's been a long time coming but I have got there!! The race bike is (or should I now say was) completed and ready for the begining of the season!!
Hartland Quay is a great place to go for a hill climb but I think that has as much to do with going to the pub the night before as what the hill is like!! After many nights swearing in the garage the TDM was ready and started first push of the button, it got through scrutineering with only the need for a catch tank for the carb breathers!
The first run was somthing of a trial by fire having not even sat on the bike before so pre run nervs were on teh spin cycle in my guts!! Or was that last nights beer?? Well the bike feels superb after all my messing with it the only problems were a lack of top end power and a funny clonk (more on this later)!
The day passed without any problems and I managed to get close to my personal best for the hill and managed a spectacular last in class!!

Back in the garage I found the reason for the lack of top end in that the exhaust cam was one tooth retarded on the timing!! ohmy.gif

The beasty at Margam Park!!

I hope that worked!! I can build bikes but sometimes the interweb is a little beyond me!!

Right back to the story!!
After correcting the cam timing the bike pulled much stronger and was far better to ride and I was getting the hang of it to so much so I managed to come second to last in class this time!!
I was well chuffed about this but the funny clonk was still ther (said there would be more on this) well any way at the end of the day on my return to the pits the clonk problem identified itself when the engine seized solid!! Fortunatly I was only crusing in a straight line so pulled the clutch and was able to coast to a stop!!

Currently the engine is spread round the garage waiting for parts, the number 2 big end shell had spun!! But it's going to be all new and shiny ready for Gurston Down at the end of May!!

Now a little more about the bike??
Well the frame forks and swingarm are MK1 TDM form a 1996 bike, the engine is TRX850, the front wheel is from an FZR600 but I don't know what year, I think it's the same as a TRX?? Well that wasn't so easy to fit as I had to make my own spacers for it and move the clipers 2mm towards the wheel as the hub part of the rim is narrower than the stock TDM. The calipers are R6 blue spots and I'm using an R1 master cylender (just what happened to turn up on eBay). The rear wheel is from a 600 Bandit and to fit this I had to drill out the swing arm and the chain adjusters to take the 20mm axel from the Bandit, I used the Bandit cush drive, disk and caliper carrier which had to be machined down (I can't remember by how much at the moment) the rear caliper is of a GSXF750 and rather than make up atorque arm I chopped the TDM caliper carrier down so it could be bolted to the swign arm. The tank is mounted at the back and is from a Thumpstar pit bike as is the seat which I have shoved up to the air box to move my weight 6in further forward!!
The bike is well balanced with a 50 / 50 weight distribution even with me sat on it!!

More later hope you all enjoy!!
Hillclimbing....
....It's an up hill struggle!!

EXCELLENT MadAd, I've been looking forward to that for a while now. Sorry to hear about the big-end but you seem to have a good handle on the repair, good on ye!
Keep them coming...

Have you ever lent someone 20 quid and never seen it again? It was probably worth it.

Fantastic. I really like it.

How heavy was it after you stripped all of the fat off the bike?

It looks as if you could drop those yokes further if you needed to.

What bikes were you up against?

I wondered if anyone would notice that. smile.gif I think the action photo was from a run in March, but he is called Adam and is riding a TDM according to the results.

Studley yes that is me!! good.gif
The two numbers are for two different clubs I was trying to get the same number to make it simple but failed!!
The bike weighs in at 175kg with fuel oil and water, I would have liked to get it a little lighter but it's a good starting point.
The usual collection of bike for the 1300 class is KTM 950 SM, a Ducati 960 special, GSXR1000 K5, TZR250 with an Aprilia RSV motor in it and an SV1000. I find it great coz of the wide range of machines and specials. Although the fastest bikes are the ex Supermoto race bikes.
Yes we did spot the car at the bottom of the cliff and wondered how the bloke survived?? ohmy.gif
Rattler I'll have to remember that although I'll not be going to Hartland at the end of the year as a mate has decied to get married that weekend and has roped me into bedst man duties!! Better get some Rattler for him!! biggrin.gif
There are a number of event near Port Talbot they are all organised by the Port Talbot Motorcycle Racing Club or PTMCRC for short the events list shoudl be on there web site which can be found here.
MCBodge I race with the NHCA and the PTMCRC which are both sprint hill climb, all on tarmac, unless it all gose wrong!!

Cheers for the answers.

How do you rate your TDM as a hillclimber? I guess that power is 'adequate' and the blue-spots are presumably good. How is the handling/grip?

What is the advantage of a Bandit wheel?

From NHCA website:

I do like the idea of hill climbing/sprints and I like the home-brew specials, but I know someone who does car events and there is a lot of prep and travel for a very small amount of actual riding.

ps. Which bike did you beat?

I like the TDM as a hill climber and I'm not the first to use one either.
The power is good but it's the wide spread of torque that makes it!! I was previously on a YZ250 so the flexibility of the engine is something new for me and I'm liking it!!
The Bandit read wheel is 4.5 inches wide so better for fitting a 160 section tyre as it's not pulled out of shape. I choes a 160 section tyre as there is a vast aray of racing rubber in that size and nothing in a 150.
Yes there is a lot of prep and traveling for the amount of riding done I think in a whole season my bike will not even do 50 miles but it's the social side of the events that make them good and hill climbers are a friendly bunch!!
I managed to beat the Ducati 960 special!! good.gif

I can imagine that a YZ was almost all-or-nothing.

In the grand scheme of things the TDM doesn't have high peak power or torque, but does have a flat torque curve and I suppose that it is no use having more grunt than you can use (which a lot of bikes do). Is your engine fairly standard with a different exhaust?

I found this Shelsey Walsh NHCA video on Youtube -It looks really good.

Is it the tight bends that suit the supermotos more than a sports bike? -You could presumably do a lot of the runs in 1st gear on a 1000cc sports bike, but maybe the power delivery would maybe be too fierce when it kicks in and the steering not sharp enough. Having said that I bet a CR500 qould be quite effective.

The YZ had been carfully tuned by a previous owner to give it more midrange but it was still peaky.

Yes currently the motor is stock other than the exhaust althought I have a few ideas up my sleeve for next season.

Yes the tight bends and short straight suit the supermoto bikes, but they don't suit me.
I have heard of people doing whole events in 1st which some how just seams wrong? I think it was something like a Honda X11.

I'm currently on used Dunlop wets and will have to see what Santa brings for next season laugh.gif

I reckon your photos qualify for the 2011 Calendar, look good opposite the 'in motion' photo of Pete7 at the IoM. smile.gif

Could you enter your bike into more events if you wanted a busier season, as it were ?

Would love to see it in action... I always thought the TDM's frame and engine alone look good, and you are showing that to great effect!

Good luck and hope to see you race sometime!
