It happened to me on 900 after I had done the valve clearance. I put it down to slightly overfilling the system at rebuild and/or perhaps an airlock in the system. I ran the bike with the radiator cap off and topped the system up through the top.
Things seemed to settle down after that.

Found it !
Quote from Whiteride.........
when i had my valve clearances done my bike boiled up exactly the same symptoms and it was because the two small pipes near the rad cap wre on the wrong way around. the overflow pipe needs to be at the top and the pipe from the fast idle valve at the bottom,

that is not where we were looking, top of Rad Cap !
We were on the Fast idle plunger, are they contected , " Light Bulb" !
They are both connected wrong ?
Been out and took the side off.
The very thin pipe is the top over flow which goes direct under the bike.
The next one down from the cap, goes to the top pipe on the fast idle plunger.
There is a third pipe which branches off a large pipe on the top of the engine, this goes to the bottom of the fast idle plunger.
So check they are all like this ?

Measured after its warm.
Minimum mark is about 30mm from bottom.
So yes, it needs topping up,
its probably as a result of all that coolant pissing out of your engine !
