I'm suspecting my clutch need replacing so i'm wondering:

- do i order just the friction plates, or should i also get the steel ones?

- the parts list i have (for the 4TX) has two different partnumbers for the friction plate (2 of one type and 7 of the other), and then 8 clutch plates. is it correct that i need all of these?

- anything else i should replace wihle i'm at it? Release bearing?

I seem to remember hearing that the clutch squeal can be avoided by modification to the clutch basket. Does anyone have info on this?

Can not advise you as to weather you need to replace everything but I would recommend putting the new plates in oil for a min of 48hrs a fiend of mine forgot to do this and ended up having to re do everything again within a few months good look

Hi Galilee!

Ideally disassemble, to assess the whole. Check if the thickness of the disks (fiber) and length of the compression springs 6 are within tolerance.  The metal discs (on a glass plate) to give slack or buckling.
Looking at the parts catalog I also was in doubt:
item 8   = 7 disks fiber   = ok
item 12 = 8 metal discs = ok
item 7   = 2 disks (also in fiber?) are thicker than those of item 8 ??
I never needed to disassemble the clutch of my 850.

Cheers!

Just picked up on this. I've just replaced all the plates ( friction & steel) plus springs & bearing. Paid Yamaha prices but hopefully should last a while. Pressure plate only requires 8 Nm torque so go carefully
