Have replaced the battery this season, but still it drains the battery after a few days of sitting still. Are there any recommendations of where to begin the search for this? Any common faults on the electrical system? I dont have anything extra connected to the battery.

Have measured the voltage when ignition off: About 12,2 V. When engine running its about 14,3 V.

Something is stealing current... Or faulty battery again...?

I'm not 100% sure but some on here have had similar problems caused by an alarm or immobiliser.  Maybe you could test for current leakage starting at the fuse box, this should help identify which circuit the leakage is coming from.

your battery voltage should be 12.68volts when healthy,  disconnect the battery leads to see if the voltage rises, do a full charge off the bike and leave half a day to get rid of surface charge then test! but at 12.2 volts I suspect some thing is draining it, and as studley say's monitor the voltage at the fuses!

These make life easier to do this test :good:

Ooh me again  :) had problems only in winter though before i hooked up a trickle charger, no need for it through summer, was defo alarm related plus freezing brass monkey weather....sounds like the OP may have a different problem !!!!

Does your 900 have a factory immobiliser and if so does it go in sleep mode after 24 hours ie does it stop flashing. One of mine drained the battery because of this.

I can get five days out of my battery even with a good few add-ons suckling it. Good to finally realise that the red flashing light stops because it goes to sleep! But my battery is now dead. Went away and the place where the bike was stored switched off the trickle charger by mistake! Can someone just reassure me that a battery can be totally dead a few times without it being too serious. Had to change the original one earlier this year as I was away for five months and it sat dead all that time!!

No, sorry. Total discharge of a lead accu may be disastrous, more likely the longer it stays in that condition.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I've come out this morning to fit the horns and to fix a bad connection on the heated grips, left the grips on without the engine running for , max 2 mins and the bike wouldn't start. Jumped the bitch off and checked the voltage and its not charging at all.  Battery was at 11.5 v  standing and at 5000 revs only went up to 12.58 v .Had this problem on my Divvy and the reg/rect was at fault . Put a new battery on it (Yuasa ) soon after getting the bike less than 2 yrs so would you think reg/rec or another problem?????

Disconnected the battery and is now on a trickle charge overnight.

Sorry ProudViking and thanks all

Buck

Bugger! This battery has died once and like that for about a week, charging it right now! When you say disastrous Bjorge, do you mean for the battery only?

So if I replace said battery, should I go for a lithium one or stick with a normal one?

Yes, the battery only. I'm not entirely sure about limits, though - my experience is that a sound, not too old battery can stand a longer period before it is ruined.

I have no experience with lithium batteries on mc, but I guess the same thing applies; Don't fully discharge them !

Best way to find out if it's the battery is to fully charge it off the bike with a low amps battery charger, then leave it to settle overnight/12 hours and see if it holds a full charge.  If it does, refit and then check the voltage with engine running.

thanks Studley, its currently disconnected and trickle charging at the moment, took the rectifier off and checked it out and all seems to be good
