My 06 900 has started to eject coolant from an overflow pipe at an engine temperature just before the cooling fan comes on, you can hear the coolant boiling at this point too, thought it may be the rad cap so I bought a new one, swapped it over, but it is still doing the same, any suggestions on what to check next?

I had a similar problem with the Tiger, mine turned out to be rad cap, I some guys fitted aftermarket ones but had a different pressure reading from OEM.

have you checked the thermostat?

temp sender? have you got a temp gauge fitted, what does it read when fan cut in.

sensor for fan - dodgy?

it may be a number of things Pantboy, May be an airlock , temp sender not coming on on time , a leak somewhere letting air in or at worst the head gasket going or the water pump failed . I would wait for a few more learned members for their input as I have only had mine a short while and there may be other faults that bring this thing on.

Good luck anyway bud

The fan does come on just as the needle hits the red line, fairly typical for a 900 from what I have read on here, not got a temp gauge so no idea what temp it's running at, the bike runs at 'normal' temp when moving.

Some time ago i had the radiator off and mixed up the two pipes just below the rad cap :istupid:  and just before the fan came on it ejected the coolant

onto the floor as if wasn't going back into the expansion bottle

Have you had the radiator of recently?

mine went very high while out today mate and If I remember the fan cuts in just before redline , dont quote me on that but 2 minutes later it was down to half way so I think that the TDM fan should cut in a bit earlier for me as it used to on my Fazer.

I haven't, but that's not saying someone else hasn't, the bike has been in for a service at a local garage, how do I check if the pipes are connected correctly?

Just took a quick snap of the rad cap and pipes, are these pipes the correct way round?

Hi Pantboy

There connected the wrong way round just swap them round and check your coolant level in radiator and expansion bottle

The thin pipe needs to be at the top next to rad cap

:good:

i'll swap them over in the morning, fingers crossed that is the problem.

As far as I know the pipes have always been like that, the rad has never been off during my ownership, coolant has been changed, but I presume there would be no reason to touch them pipes to drain/refill the system.

You might need to take them off, for a 24,000 service when you check the shims or to change the spark plugs if you want plenty of room.

Exactly. When Lee did my valve check, I almost put them back the wrong way. Lee pointed out that I was putting them the wrong way round and said the result would be exactly as you describe.

Pipes swapped and all working great.

Thanks all, with a special mention for gilly for being daft enough to connect them the wrong way round in the first place but big enough to admit the mistake to help a fellow idiot, next round is on me if we ever meet :)
