Hi all,

My trusty old 3VD has been a bit problematic starting lately.... I'd press the starter button 3 or 4 times and only hear click from starter solenoid relay then finally starter motor would crank & start the bike.

Time for a new starter solenoid relay I thought.

I have a few spares from another 3VD so proceeded to swap starter solenoid relays - no joy.

While swapping solenoids back my socket dropped off the driver and shorted across the solenoid terminals. Bugger, that's fried it.

Now instead of click, click, click start nothing happens when I press the starter... really time for a NEW starter solenoid relay I thought. Yes, have also replaced blown fuse.

Ordered one from ebay for $12US & have been shorting across the terminals to start the bike in the interim.

New solenoid arrived & installed - still no action when I press the starter button.  :sorry:

Have lost my wiring diagram.. anyone got an idea where the problem still likely to be? (beside seat and keyboard?)

Normally such a reliable old beast - will crack 400,000 kms next oil change.

Cheers

Start with checking that one of the two solenoid wires switches to 12v when you press the button, and that the other is a solid return to ground.

If the sol is new it must be a fault on one of those wides

Ohlins, PC3, fuel cut defeat, +4deg timing, 17" front wheel.

Hi Godzillamonster!

The Start button may have poor contact due to oxidation.

Or collector armature starter / brushes are dirty or worn.
With a cable thicker wire, try to make a direct connection test the battery to the starter.

Cheers!

is ur battery knackered, check all the electric connectors on the bike, especially the flag terminal connectors into the ignition coil. ( i learnt the hard way) i m sure if u have 400k km on the beast the connectors wouldnt say no to a good clean anyway.

Hi all.

Still haven't identified where the issue is....

I need a wiring diagram to trace the starting circuit. Is there somewhere I can download one - have lost that page from my Haynes manual...

The starter relay is working & starting the bike when I get apply power to the blue-white wire to it.

Starter circuit broken somewhere upstream of the starter button - no voltage either side of the switch but am scratching my head following the circuit without a wiring diagram

Help please

Thanks

Sadly, the old girl has been retired just shy of 500,000 kms - at least for now.

Got too complacent with the reliability and ran it low on oil.

A month or 2 after the next oil change my big end bearings (I suspect) gave up on my way home from work - horrific rumble from the motor and power dropping off by the kilometer. Still got me home though.

That was a couple of weeks before we left NZ and moved to Bali.

Been here 2.5 years now and am getting around on a KLX250 which works well here. Lots of wheelies and general anarchic riding.

TDM is sitting in a farm shed in NZ awaiting our eventual return.

If I can find a replacement motor I'll bring it back to life. TDMs rare as hens teeth in NZ so will have trouble sourcing a replacement...

Good to hear you're alive and well. :)  You might find the engine to be repairable ?  Maybe new shells and a crankshaft regrind and bingobangobongo !

500,000km !  That is a brilliant result, not too many bikes get that far.
