Hi guys,

Just a quickie, Michelin Sirac 110/80-18 TT58R tyre, Michelin market it as a REAR tyre.  Can I use it on the front of my 92 TDM 850? I know it fits the rim but will it perform very well?

Cheers

I finally get another real bike) TDM850 MK1 '91 and a KLR 650 '88 for the rough stuff.

I can't tell you if it will perform well, but most people reverse the tread when mounting a rear tire on the front.  It is done fairly often, so I doubt there is any danger in it.  Not ideal, but probably not an issue either.

Thanks for the opinion, I am of the same mind, reverse the tread.  You're right it's not ideal but where I am (pacific coast Mexico) my selection is very limited, don't wanna go full dirt knobbly tyres, but need something to cover fairly rugged terrain sometimes.

It looks like they make a Pirelli MT60 in a 110/80-18.  The Michelin T63 looks like a knobby, but it isn't very aggressive.  They make it in a rear, but I don't think it is directional.  Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Hi, there are a few on here who have reversed a Sirac.  Try searching the All about TDM section for sirac. ;)

I heard it's because when fitted as a rear tyre the tread pattern is designed to give best traction under drive. When fitted at the front the tread pattern is reversed to give best traction under braking.

Or blind summit like that

Carcass construction, apparently the layers overlap one way to cope with acceleration forces on a rear tyre and the other way to cope with braking forces on the front.

Concur. If you don't reverse a rear on the front the braking forces are opposite and pull the lamination joins apart.
