Time for a new set.

 

I saw somewhere here that the front sprocket has a damper: does it?  Just had a look in-situ at mine (OEM) and I can not be certain either way.

 

If it has, would a non-OEM kit come with a damped front sprocket?

 

Any recomendations on current good combos of chain and sprocket manufacturers?

Watching this 'cause I too am due c and s. Seem to recall most folk recommend renthal sprocks and DID chains. You thinking of re gearing?

Probably not, because of the speedo problem.  Unless any improvement is worth it?

Original OEM from sprocket has a "damping" ring on it - something like this:

 

 

I believe the above Ognibene sprockets are one of only a few that have the same damper in an after market sprocket.

 

CelticBiker uses Rental + DID mix with good longevity.

I've used AFAM with good results (~18K miles, but I'm pretty hard on mine)

 

Avoid JT & sunstar (I think) sprockets as they're pants.

On my previous 9-er the original chain and sprocket lasted about 44.000 km. The front sprocket was the rubberised one. I`ve looked for a replacement for the original rubberised front sprocket. But could only find one at ogibene (courtasy to dmista). So i went for a `regular` DID chain and sprocket set.

 

Havent noticed any difference in the rubberised versus the non rubberised front sprocket..

 

DID have suited me  well during my long career in motorcycling. AND... I have invested in a tool to close an open DID-chain. Thats helps too to choose  an DID set..

Fitted Ognibene F & R sprockets with a DID Gold chain last summer, 

 

Deffo quieter running chain than without the cushion - these sprockets did make it necessary to move the Scottoiler nozzle from the base of the rear sprocket as the chain cushion prevented almost all of the oil reaching the chain(it's now in a non-optimal position until the next C & S change).  . Pees me off enough to consider replacing the rear sprocket with a standard type before the front sprocket does many more revs.

I think I will go the same route as velf2003.  £65 for rubber rings seems like a bit of a try-on.

+1. Always used DID and no issues.

You'll notice the difference in sprocket quality well before the chain will need looking at with the cheaper "kits"

Thanks for advice - no damping ring and stayed away from JT or unknown sprockets.

 

Delivery is 25th December and dropped off free from a passing sleigh.

i and lots folk on blackbird forums use em on birds, and they are a lot heavier o sprockets than a TDM

Merhaps it might just be the TDM spec JT's possibly??
I've had significantly lower mileage out of a JT, and others have commented on them...

 

Or it could just be pure chance...good to hear a positive for them though!

JT were fine on the 9r, certainly on mine, bad reviews seem to have carried over from the 850.

I'm just about to change my c and s. on a 9er. Anybody know what size socket I'll need to remove the front sprocket? i don't want any surprises when I finally get a chance to do it.
Am I going to need a chain breaking/fixing tool or can I loop the chain on?

I admit I've only ever done this job on a 125 before..

36mm iirc, yes, no unless you drop the swinging arm.

DiD Chain and JT sprockets on mine. Original set lasted 27k miles and changed for DiD/JT. First DiD/JT set changed at 50k miles (for same again) never had an issue and only time chain needed adjusting was at tyre changes circa 4-5k mile intervals. I do use a Scottoiler though.

 

 

Edit to add - It's always been the front sprocket to wear out first on mine.

You will need a 36 mm socket , which is deep as it has to clear the speed sensor thingy on the end of the crank. I had to buy one , something like this
