My Givi rack (347F rack for top box only) snaps its mounting lug again!!

This is the third set of these racks which has snapped, all on the right side.

2 at the main attachment lug where it meets the grab rail and 1 at the small lug that locates underneath the frame

So now I have given up with Givi racks and have mounted a universal fit monokey attachment plate directly to the Yamaha grab rail/rack

This required some foam in between rack and plate.

Why did Yamaha make the rack convex so it is not easy to attach anything flat to it!!!

This feels much stronger than the feeble Givi rack which appears to have been made from the cheapest, crappiest, weakest, most likely to rust metal possible

So now all I need to do is throw away all the old Givi racks, 3 broken right rails and three unbroken left rails

Rant over

Hi - shame about the Givi rails failing - I never believed they were any good - having watched topboxes bounce about across rally sites. Good luch with your new fittings.

If you have a spare monokey base plate I'd be interested in a purchase which may ease the pain a little  :)

Cheers.

I have a base plate fitted direct to the Yamaha rack. This was discussed here recently and I commented and contributed pix. If you cannot find that from a Search and would like to see the thread say so and I'll see if I can locate it. IIRC the top of the Yamaha rack is convex.

Secondly, I also have side pannier racks fitted, and these came with the bike when bought secondhand. There is also a pair of diagonal stays, one from each footpeg bracket up to the underside of the tail. These are genuine Givi items but I do not know which kit they are part of. IIRC I have the fitting instructions somewhere, but I cannot find them on the internet for sale now either as a separate item or included in another TDM900 kit. These seem to be designed to support the tail of the subframe and the extra load from loaded boxes. See the pic below. Perhaps this would stabilise the rear and prevent your breakages.

HTH

My bike is a 2008 model first registered in May 2009, and AFAIK supplied fitted with the racks etc to the first owner. This makes me think that these stays were a standard part of the set-up designed by Givi for the bike, and were available at that time.

Where the two long stays mount to the silencer mounting point, is there any vibration control ? A grommet or rubber isolation device ?

I can't tell from the picture if you have just one silencer, a 2:1 system ? If so then it might be related, but if not there's clearly a vibration or repeating strain traveling up that side.

I've got a Givi Wingrack 2, and like yours the long stay mounts directly to the silencer mount, but where the  side pannier carrier plate mounts to the top  plate and the side of the seat rail there are quality anti vibration mounts

Strange, I've had one of these fitted for about 12 years and 85000 miles and have never had this issue. I can't say I never exceed the max load rating, but usually I have 2-3KG in it with my work kit & laptop. I did get everything powder coated a few years back as the paint was pretty poor. I also have always had the two long stays mount to the silencer mounting points fitted.

I have the long stays too , with just a base plate and no panniers. The stays aren't bolted directly to the base plate so they must be providing some support which reduces vibration. Incidentally mine were loose when I bought the bike and were rattling on the overrun. If you have them it might be worth checking for tightness before assuming your cam chain is on the way out....

My e45s are usually chock full when I tour. I bet they weigh well over 5kg each. My Givi pannier racks have borne the weight well and, apart from the poor paint job, have lasted ten years. I'd imagine if they keep failing in the same place then it's due to stress at that point and something else is up.

fixitsan/Chris,

No anti-vibe in the mountings. I've never seen any in any Givi kit, except for the shakeproof washers they use as standard.

The pic shows the standard OE two-can exhaust, now superseded by an Ixil 2into1. :)

The diagonal stay is hard-bolted to the back of the footpeg support to make a stud onto which the silencer and pannier rack forward stay mount, secured by an acorn nut.

Ok Steve, I was pondering the coincidence  of it being the same side as a single exhaust...however no real idea of why it should matter comes to mind !

The Wingrack2 has a couple of rubber mounts for 2 upper connections to the bike. It has them for the lower stay bar too , but I think it clamps the bar flange tightly against the plate, making them pointless (maybe mine had a washer missing...hmmmm) . The plate is diecast aluminium, maybe the addition of rubber is due to the crackingability of diecast Ally ?

The mounts are circled in this piccie https://www.flickr.c...eposted-public/

Just had my first one break yesterday, on the right hand side where it connects to the grab rail - luckily I still have the SW Motech Alurack from my previous 900 which I can easily go back to using.

We both have the topcases directly mounted on the wing of the TDM900.

Several years ago a made the mistake of checking the weight of my topcase.

With the books (4 weeks holiday) it was more then 15kg :hide:

My wife a little less. Never had a problem tough.

Hallrob

Maybe its the roads around us!

I am down the road in Oxted

I now have mine mounted on the grabrail/rack and am very happy with it there.

It has been on since February and done about 5000 miles

It is very solid and I have much better confidence than the flexy givi snappy things!

I really notice how much movement top boxes on other bikes have whilst I am commuting into London.

They all seem to be on givi type racks and bounce and flex quite a bit

I am definately sticking with grabrail/rack option

Anyone interested in the remains of mine before I take it down the dump?

I'll be keeping the monokey plate but I have all the fittings and (somewhere) the support stays - just the one broken lug on the right hand side. I don't suppose anyone has had a breakage on the left have they?

Either collect or cover the postage and it's all yours
