Hello again Carpers,

After a long hiatus (ie. life on hold caring for a terminally ill father) I'm finally back on the black stuff and it's great to be back.

The good news is that after being ignored for 18 months the TDM 900 sailed through it's MOT today. The bad news is that about 45 miles and a lovely run later I gave her an er, 'Italian tune up' and on the overrun she suddenly ran rough with a fair bit of vibration, especially around 5000rpm.

I immediately thought the cam chain had jumped a tooth on the cam and after looking through here realised that's a strong possibility, especially as it's the tensioner side of the cam chain that goes slack on closed throttle from high revs.

Do these sound like symptoms of being one or more teeth out? Has this happened to anyone? She starts & ticks over fine but when you get going feels rather lumpy.

Being a 02 model, the helpful posts on here scream the tensioner needs replacing for the longer 5PS-12210-10 model (£150 from Fowlers, not sure about these 30 squid ones from ebay...https://www.ebay.co....m/361964489338)so that's a certified to-do.

The rocker covers will have to come off to check the cam positions so I might as well give the tappets a coat of looking at (should be ok with only 15,000 miles) but as they say, 'whilst yer down there...'

Appreciate any input you wise sages can offer as it's slightly marred my first ride on 2 wheels for a long, long time.

Looks like it jumped 3 teeth imho, according to the symptoms you describe.

You're right about changing the tensioner but I strongly suggest you get the genuine one from Yamaha - if you really want a cheap one I might be tempted to sell you my old one for 25 quids...this is probable the same you found on ebay.

You may check the valve clearance as well, but that's more for the peace of mind at that mileage.

Btw sorry about your loss.

Thanks JBW,

As I've not been on her a while I'm a bit out of touch with what's normal and what's not however there was no rattle on the overrun or any increase in engine noise, just slightly lumpy running and vibration.

If anyone knows a cheaper place to get the revised tensioner than the £150 Fowlers want then please PM me!

Before you go splashing out - check  you've no tight spots on your drive chain after a long lay off

Thanks Dandy, that's a good point and after a solo ride out today (with a vibration that felt like I was in too high a gear even when the revs were around 4-5k) it did cross my mind. I've given the final drive chain a cursory glance but will look further.

I prefer my drive chains on the slightly loose side as I'm not exactly light and then I may have pillion + luggage.

I'm two up to the Island in August so if nothing else, I think I'll change the tensioner for peace of mind.
