Another Stripped Thread On The Oil Filter Cover

Has anyone inserted a helicoil for the long bolt on the outside of the filter cover? If so, did you need to remove the oil strainer cover (sump)? The reason I ask is that this bolt goes through the strainer and into the crank case by the looks of it. Just hoping I can get away without removing the strainer cover to insert a helicoil. Problem is knowing how far to drill, tap and wind in the coil.
Thanks for any advice,
J.

Worth trying a stud first? 6mm studding inserted with some loctite to catch the good threads behind the damaged. Can saw off the remaining studding once the lactate has set all back together.

Thanks for replies, any gotchyas with removing the strainer cover? From the parts diagram, looks like there are a few components in there that may prove difficult to get back in place. Presumably it needs a new gasket on re-assembly?
Cheers,
J.
Strainer is inside the sump cover, dont need to go in.

Nevermind the sensor plug. Anyone have any ideas on getting the headers out of the exhaust ports. All the studs are out as well as the bolt into the frame underneath, but the headers will not move. I've never experienced this before. Normally the studs are the difficult bit.
Dribble some brake fluid around them (it's a great creeping penetrating fluid), let them soak a few hours, then use a computer keyboard 'air duster' inverted - the liquid which comes out goes down to temperatures as low as -50C I believe.
And then after the clever stuff, if it doesn't work, go back to using brute force and ignorance
