Can anyone help? Checking clearances on my 92, found i had to change shims, so removed cams. On reassembly i have released tensioner, aligned static time marks, faced lobes away from each other on no. 1 but find it impossible to align timing mark letters on cam sprockets with cylinder head. Marks on inlet sprocket are approx. half a tooth out, no matter what i do. Is this normal? Could it be due to worn cam chain, tho i did,nt think it was- no rattles, 35k. Dare i rebuild it like this? Would appreciate any advice.

One of my favourite ever threads.... http://www.carpe-tdm...light=cam chain

The markings at the top are just not THAT accurate......as long as you have the static marks spot on and are using the correct "E" and "I" markings all should be fine!

It is best to mark across the spockets and chain so that you are confident everything is going back in the same place.

I guess you have done yer shims now? If not I have a free shim exchange program.....lemme know what shim sizes you need and I'll swapsie with the sizes you need...if I have em.

G'luck.

Even a rough splattering of tipex helps to make sure all is in order on reassembly:

Notice inlet marker doesnt line up as well as exhaust (but they are as they were on dismantle):

I had exactly the same with mine, fortunatly before I took out the cam tensioner I was a bit paranoid and took some photos so was able to check that I put it back together the same as I took it apart. Mine definatly looks like it's about half a tooth out.

Thanks Dapleb, will feel a bit happier putting it back together now, forgot all about splashing the tipex about. I think your marks are as bad as mine, far out man!

i think 2 get a perfect alignment you need adjustable sprockets & a vernier dial like they use in race engines.Yours will be fine the way youve done it

Do the same shims fit the 900? May be interested in about 12k miles time. It won't be long at the rate I'm clocking up miles!
