Wicky, My onion for what it is worth. I reckon that the TDM is a much under rated boike. Interestingly this is probably because it is ok at most types of biking duties but does not neatly fit into a distinct market segment. It is reasonable at most things and fitting dual purpose tyres will make it only a reasonable adventure tourer. Unfortunately it will never be as sexy as the purpose built ktms or Bimmers, so it will not sell in the market segment with only a cheap makeover.

With the 900 in its 6th year of production without a major upgrade I think that it is destined to go down in history as an old duffers bike, owned by a dedicated bunch, who seem to have lost sight of the motorcycles many deficiencies.

A huge pity, all those years ago when Yamaha had its beautiful TRX and its technologically superior XTZ750 to build on they made the disastrous marketing decision to morph both of these brilliant bikes into the TDM. Removing them from leading two distinct market segments and creating a compromise that not many people wanted.
Brave, but ultimately stupid marketing!!

4. Silly high maintenance 5V head. every 24,000 I don't think that is high maintenance

I think you'll find the TDM and XTZ were around before the TRX.




What I'd like to see is a full 1000cc TDM type machine from Yamaha.

Suzuki has one (Strom 1000)
Honda has one (Varadero 1000)
Kawasaki had one (K Strom 1000)
Aprilia has one (Caponord 1000)
Triumph has one (Tigger 1050)
BMW allegedly has one (GS 1200)
Ducati has a sort of one (Multiblender 1000)

yamaha? a mere 900 wanna be.
Not getting at the 900, probably a fine bike, but when compared to the size, road prescence, luggage hauling abilities, and perceived "market leaders/contenders", the TDM comes up short.

I am not sure why so many cry out for the return of the XTZ? It was a nice road-bike for sure (I owned one myself) but it was hopelessly poorly balanced and too revvy to work well off-road; big singles like the simple and cheap but effective XT/DR/XL series are not only much better but actually make fun when working through mud and sand.
Besides, most unpaved roads are either disappearing or are being closed. And even if they weren't, very few people have the skills or courage to take a 230 kg / 80+ bhp bike in seriously rough terain and actually get some pace from all the available power.

Still, given the great number of "white shirts & ties" steering their Camel-trophy 4x4s through big cities to their boring office jobs, a desert-racer-like Yamaha could prove a commercial success. The aluminum cases can easily transport a laptop and considerable lunchbox while the sheer bulk of these bikes let you get stuck in traffic, enabling by-standers to admire your alleged sense of adventure.

Personally I think the road-orientated cheap & cheerful TDM that is still "bouncy" enough to survive the desasterously maintained UK road-network is spot on for people that want to do more than just show off. The competition may look more fashionable and some (but not all) have a few more ponies but the TDM is still a very desirable bike when you can see through all the modern bike marketing bullshit.

It show that most of the Dakar bike have went smaller from the days of the r100gs and the XTZ750 to the KTM 690, WRF450, BMW F650 they are using now. I wonder if BMW will start using there F800 as a Dakar bike now. May be the 800-900cc twin has some life left in it yet.

IMHO, this would send a simple message, you´ve had your day, now the world is fighting back, fook with us ("us" being the rest of the world, whatever colour, creed, or religious dispostion that just want to live their lives in peace without being under the treat from someone elses´s point of view), and this is what you´ll get.

No that is not a fair and humane way of treating them......

Try using a .22 rifle and starting at thier feet and shooting 100 round in each of thier legs upto the waist and then doing the same up thier arms to shoulders, then go back to waist to chest and then start on thier heads.............

And the same goes for rapist's, murders, kiddy fiddlers etc....

Sorry but these are my personal thought and everybody knows the where the line is and soon as these kind of people step over it they should lose all human rights!!!
