Hi Guys,

Seeing as you lot have done it all already, seems like I do nothing but ask questions on this forum (There are a couple of other forums I still hang around and I always seem to be the one with the answers, but hey, that's how it goes smile.gif)

Anyway, looking to buy hard luggage, and in OZ seems we don't have a lot of choice, Hepco-Becker or Givi. Givi is damned expensive over here (probably around AUD$2000 for the same stuff from Givi), but the Hepco-Becker stuff seems to be fairly reasonably priced.

So, what I am looking to buy is a pair of 40L Junior Panniers, Pannier mounting frames and a set of engine bars. Total price is about AUD$1300 delivered, which is not too bad.

My question is, do any members have direct experience with these products? If you own them, are there any problems/design flaws etc I should be aware of? How do they stand up to punishment (rough roads, corrugations etc)?

Thanks

MikeF

Hi, I recently read that Hepco-Becker did not come with English fitting instructions...so can you speak German?

An old Cherokee told his grandson, "My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us.
One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humilty, kindness, empathy and truth.
The boy thought a while then asked "Which Wolf wins?"

"The one you feed" replied the old man...

Ok, but it was a UK main-stream dealer that had recently stopped selling H-B kits due to lack of English instructions.

Hi Mike...i've like to give my fair bit on this...

When i first got my TDM,i was using GIVI wingrack with GIVI 45ltr panniers.this cost around SGD$700
GIVI

TDM with the boxes

Riding with the boxes

Rack alone on the TDM

That was almost 3yrs ago...used that for about 1yr.
Plus points.
1.can storage quite alot of stuffs.inclusive 1 FF helmet and one open face helmet or 2 open face helmet.
2.It could be transfered to use as a top box.
Not so good points.
1.Water sipped in at the end of 1yr using it but i believed twinrider has said that the seal at the side can be replace
2.Don't look so good as panniers IMO.

After sold the GIVI,i turned to H&B junior. This would cost SGD$950 inclusive of racks and 1 pair of Junior 40ltr.
H&B

TDM with the H&B panniers

H&B racks on the TDM

Rider+TDM+H&B

Plus point
1.very strong and rugged
2.1 side of pannier can store 1 full face and raincoat.
3.Looks great with panniers or just racks only.
4.Don't need to use the key everytime you need to open the pannier.

Not so good point.
1.my friend which has the same H&B panniers, his pannier key are able to unlocked my pannier...yikes.
2.panniers cant be use at topbox like the GIVI.

Next after H&B,i got an offer from a good friend from Kuala Lumpur selling me the Yamaha panniers..i've always wanted to have those...but its too expensive here...a pair of panniers and racks cost SGD$1800.1 side pannier able to store FF helmet.

Yamaha

Slightly wider than H&B

TDM+yamaha panniers.

Comparison between H&B and yamaha

TDM with yamaha sideracks.

Plus points.
1.looks great.
2.Your TDM will never feel left out when side by side with ST,RT,FJR..hehe
3.Looks great too without the panniers...your bikes feel naked.

Not so good point
1.Need keys to open every time
2.Lock design crappy.easy to peel the box open.
3.Freaking expensive.

Lastly and currently,
i am using the Hepco&Becker alu 41ltr.Suits my needs.More stronger than any of those above.Bike fall during let it stand on its on due to soft ground.the cases don't feel any pinch.once i bang it on a Big Truck driver mount legde during me squeezing through traffic. Its a massive bang i swear.but the damage, makes me laugh..just a small dent.Price of the panniers.SGD$800 without racks
The racks was modded because i need it to be lower position than the original H&B sideracks.

and i did said it fall at the side.

Plus points.
1.Very very strong
2.Can fill with loads of goodies in.
3.Looks rugged
4.no need keys to open panniers all the time
5.open from the top

Not so good points
1.wont have the exclusive feelings of the TDM when side by side with ST,RT,FJR
2.can't fit FF helmet
3.have to mod the sideracks.

Hope this infos helps...

Cheers.

Thank you everybody, especially AJ, massive post there with lots of good stuff in it. Just what I wanted.

Will go with the H&B kit. Looks nicer as well. smile.gif

HM, do you still have the racks? If you do, could you snap me a quick picture of the front top mounting point, not the big one on the grab rail, but the one further forward? It bolts onto the point there the original occy strap holders(?) were.

Here's i cut and paste from Hartside Man's pictures.

Don't really get what ya mean...

Anyways, the H&B racks comes with the signal lights holder...so you have to shift the signals from the rear mudguard to the side racks...its better a more nicer location than the Yamaha sideracks that comes with the signal lights holder.

I don't have the bike anymore huh.gif but i still have the racks in my shed. if you want a picture whist fitted i am sorry i cannot provide that. what i can say though is they are really easy to mount at the point you mention. if i remember correctly there is a small alluminium spacer privided that goes between the rack and the hole where the bungee strap hangers were.

also provided are some longer bolts to mount it.

the top mount is on the grabrail and also comes with longer bolts and spacers.

the bottom mount is the exhaust mounting bolt.

let me know if you still want some pictures of the racking off the bike good.gif

Hi HM

This picture shows the front mounting point of the existing Ventura rack I have mounted on the bike.

I'm hoping the H&B front/top mounting point is flat plate so I can modify the Ventura rack mounting point to accept the H&B as well.

Hope this makes what I am after a bit clearer smile.gif

Thanks to you all for your help. Brilliant!

Thanks to you all for your help. Brilliant!

MikeF

right Mike

this picture shows the whole rack bottom right is the exhaust mount , above that is the bungee mount your interested in, top middle is the mount for the grabrail bolt, top left is the indicator reposition mount (2 Holes)

Closer view of top middle thickness and position, and the bungee mount at the back.

Bungee mount point by itself

Top mount showing provided spacer and bolt

Bungee mount point showing provided spacer and bolt

lower exhaust mounting point

overall view showing placement and lower lug has a flat bar that passes between racks behind the rear mudguard and beneath your numberplate

Hope this helps, from your picture it would seem your going to have a tight fit on the bungee mount , the provided spacer is approx 6mm thick so if your mount boss is thicker than that it could cause you a small problem.

have you access to a metal working shop ? i am sure with a little heat and a hammer the bungee mount could be repositioned to allow you to fit both together . rolleyes.gif

Hi MarkD

Thanks so much. The pictures are exactly what I wanted.

I'm pretty handy with a hacksaw and angle grinder, so I reckon I will be able to do some cutting work on the Ventura rack and make it all fit.

Again, thankyou very much. I appreciate your efforts. You're a legend smile.gif

MarkF, I have the Nonfango hard luggage on my 900 and it is great. It is 100% waterproof, lockable and light. The topbox fits 2 FFHs(54ltr) and the panniers are 42ltr. If you want to check it out go to : http://www.flickr.co...s/73957545@N00/
There are a number of photos showing the luggage. If you want closeups let me know. I believe this system has the best aftermarket racks available.
