Right i eventually went into the shed today and tried offering the handguards up to the bike good.gif

good news is they will fit smile.gif (albeit with a modicome of modification) the right hand guard will need a fraction trimming off it to fit around the hydraulic resevoir, not too much to do. BUT and this is a big but it does touch the fairing on full lock, JUST. this is because the renthalls are about 20 mm lower than the standard bars ranting.gif so now i have ordered the 25mm riser blocks from the german site (i was considering this anyhow as I didn't like the lower position of the renthalls as much.

I origionally bought the renthalls because the sweep was less than the yamaha bars which suited my arms better. so having to lift them slightly will not cause too much bother.

the next thing i need to do after getting the risers is to machine a groove into the bar ends so the outside of the handguards will clip into position.

so the story continues and pictures will be provided when all the bits are in and modified.

I have just read all this good stuff about handguards and knuckle protectors but I am still a bit confused, could someone in the know please clarify.
There is much talk of the need to drill and tap the bar end weights in order to fit the BMW guards but I cant really tell from the miriad of different pictures why and how.
Does the outboard fitting have a bolt that passes through the guard into the weight, if so (and it looks to be the case) cant you simply undo the existing allen key bolt that holds the bar in place, put the guard in position and refit the bolt?
I know I am probably missing something obvious but i cant, for the life of me see what.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I loike tay and hang sangwiches !

Hi Wick,
yes I did but I am still a little unsure (call me stupid if you like, everyone else does [sits back and waits for message saying "Ted's stupid]).

I have never taken the bar end weights off my TDM but assume that the hex head bolt holds them in place, probably threading into an expanding bolt of some sort. If that is the case then cant the existing bolt be used (as described above).

Handguards may have been useful in the good-ol' days when winters were still winters, but I've just switched back from my "intermediate" gloves back to the summer ones. I probably try flogging me winter gloves on eBay rolleyes.gif

The end weights on the TDM are the bolt, so to speak and quite a wide one at that. For the BMW guards, you have to take off the bar end weights with an allen key.

Drill a hole into the Hex bit (where you put the allen key to unscrew), deep enough to screw the BMW guard fixing bolt.

I confess I can't remember what thread size it was, but I can tell you that the drill and tap you need to thread it, are a smaller diameter than the hex itself (thus there is no problem putting the bar end weight back onto the bike)

I don't know what your skill level is, but I passed mine to an engineering firm to drill and tap (£10 drink), but the bar ends are case hardened mild steel, so once you get through the very thin case hardening, then they are reasonably easy to drill.

If you're going to do it, use a pillar drill and clamp the weight properly, or a lathe.

Still haven’t had time to pick me hanguards up, but Friday looks good. Then I can take all I’ve learnt from this lot and fit em... I’ve got used to the heated grips cutting out every 30 or 45 mins.. Wife always says "why do you bother, nowt ever works for you?” It’s true, but the great British stiff upper lip and determination sees me through.
The wife had an interesting point though "what about me then?..Where`s my cover and heat source?".. Well I said, there’s a new inner suit for sale that uses the heat from the engine that could keep you `my dear beloved `, warm.. but it kicks in a around 750 quid... think how many pairs of shoes you can get for that love? I said.. case solved.

Next is to buy and fit some hard luggage.. So look out for all the spare bits I usually have left if anyone needs spares..
Well, everyone knows that the speed of light is 299,792,456 meters per second. and thats all very fine and dandy, and it explaines a lot in our universe ......or is maybe it opens up more questions than answers, and the most important of those is....what is the speed of dark?

When it's cold and when Angelique rides along (not often in winter) I usually let her wear my heated liner while I enjoy the heated grips. You can start there (usually enough, if the body is warm the hands will stay warm as well) and perhaps add the gloves later which plug into that liner. I would go for the liner...

Well I never... her birthday resides in August so that rules that out.. But Valentines Day is soon, isn’t it?.. You see, what I’m up against is a wife that looks at Honda Goldwings, trikes, pan Europeans etc.. and says cooor!!..
But... in essence how many times is she on the TDM...??

It’s sort of selfish isn’t it?.I tank up front there, heated grips, heated suit, heated gloves, heated helmet and heated seat.. New vario screen, new handgaurds... and wife out back there holding onto dear life and freezing her .. well not nuts .. but bits off.
Of course I’ll get her the gloves..
Well its either that or go on the weekend trip with me mates to Amsterdam.. as if there’s owt to do there eh??
Friday night I’ll see em off, and I’ll be laughing cause I got the wife heated gloves and all they got was a weekend in Amsterdam... ah!! Suckers..................DOH!!!!

Jesus i`m slow... i`d left the pc and was making da cuppa tea when suddenly it hit me... I taught "what`s a wet cat got to do with it??"... jesus.

my wifes just sat shaking her head... i said if he`d put a wet TDM up i would have understood...

Not sure if i passed this on before but the drill size required is 6.5mm and the tap is M8 x 1.25mm

the drill size charts I found said 6.8 or 6.9mm for an M8x1.25 thread. I couldnt get hold of one round here (middle of nowhere, wilts) so am getting a mate with an engineering company to tap it out. He was saying that his tool maker will make a good job of it, whcich is a bit embarassing as I had a go and made a right pigs ear of it. Hope he can sort it out.

Iv ordered some Hand guards Suzuki V 650 strom not sure when ill be collecting them yet.

I tried a 6.5 and it was tooooo tight
6.7 works fine though, much easier! Got it from Axminster Tools online.
Tapped the bars, but still got to fit the guards... looking for some thin rubber to protect the bars from the guard clamps.
So much to do so little time smile.gif

Anyone fit these Acerbis Rally Pro guards? Just wondering if they'll bolt on with no trouble.

Aluminum reinforced, perfect for dealing with predators in the urban jungle.
