Just a thought... could the 'reverse torque' from downshifting (to slow the bike) contribute to sprocket loosening?
Seems a possibility. What do you think?

a very good point and quite likely...

as for the tab washer ,its there as much to stop the nut coming all the way off as it is to stop the nut loosening, they do allow the nut to slacken in my experience,.Thats why i always use loctite.

Having looked at a new shaft closely I think the 2nd gear bush thing is a red herring. This bush seems to be fixed to the shaft and doesnt move ,if so how can it wear to allow lateral movement? also the oil seal spacer doesnt move or come loose which it would have to do to allow the sprocket to wobble without slackening the nut .
its the nut that comes loose for whatever reason so just loctite the bugger.

Just my observations and opinion.

Just looking at the parts list again , it sure does look like there's a step/shoulder in the shaft before the 2nd gear bush . its a bit blurred but its there IMO. The unobtainable bearing must fit up against this shoulder making everyting nice and solid

Interesting. I'll check my own sprocket next week. my front is an aftermatket j&t and I don't remember there being a step on it and I've been using aftermarket sprockets for a few years and have had the nuts coming loose. what stormy says about spacing out the sprocket makes sense to me entirely. what depth of spacing is necessary? I have a couple of old nut washers I could use.

i have tried using an aftermarket sprocket afore and it was too thick and would not permit me to fit a locking tab washer so i sent it back to the suplier and they sent me a genuine yam one instead, problem solved. will post a pic of a fr. sprocket laters xxxxxxxxxxx

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

The unobtainable bearing is £18.30+vat ......... drinks.gif

On the shaft that I have been fettling ......... (hang on, think I'll rephrase that!) ....

On the shaft from my bikes' gearbox, there is no shoulder. About one third distance from the sprocket end, there is a shoulder where a locating washer sits to make a shoulder for the gear wheel to butt up against. Once the gearwheel is fitted, together with its inner bearing shell, the main ball bearing is then pressed up against the gearwheel hub, and it contacts at the inner race diameter. Then the oil seal spacer is fitted (over the top of the "o" ring) and that butts up against the outside of the main bearings' inner race diameter.

Then you'd fit a correct sprocket, a new tab washer and ideally a new nut.

Then you'd go fer a ride.
