Maybe not your own, but you are promulgating it.

When did this place go all Daily Mail ???

A banker, a Daily Mail reader and a benefit claimant are sitting at a table sharing 12 biscuits. The banker takes 11 and says to the Daily Mail reader: “Watch out for the benefit claimant, he wants your biscuit”

I think my dog is a Maori.

Yes it is wonderful the way our antipodean cousins treat the native peoples of Australia and NZ -

and those huge families on benefits make up around 1% but seem more because the Daily Mail and the Sun says so - yes i know we all know someone or some family - we have a minimum wage that does not allow subistence, teh buy to let sector has massively inflated the private rental sector at teh same time as massive decline in social housing

one thing i object to is subsidising emlpoyers who will not pay a living wage through the Tax Credit system

i am all for public works (Roosevelt new Deal) paying a living wage rather than quantitatve easing some banks with our money (we do have alrge stake in them not so you would notice though)

but hey never mind we can build fences round the ghettoes and only let them out when they show their work pass -

Every body here is treated with equal opportunity. Some would say their is positive discrimination but I prefer to think of it as socio economic not race biased.
Like everywhere, a few get a bad name for many & the vast majority of Kiwis I know realise this. I actualy think Maori can do a huge amount for this country, they have a very powerful voice & understand the need to look after family, land & water. Ultimately, that is all we have so we need to take care of it.

NZ has a big problem with private rentals, particularly in major centres & cities. We currently have no capital gains tax on property so for a long time houses have been the investment of choice. This artifically inflates housing prices making it virtually impossible to get a foot on the ladder forcing families into a lifetime of renting & preventing them from gaining any equity. Another cycle which disenfranchises a large part of the population.

Our Minister of Social Affairs, Paula Bennett, used to be a solo mum on the benefit. She obviously has a bit of mettle to go from that to holding one of the biggest portfolios in government. I get the impression that despite her being eminently experienced for the job, the job is just too difficult to fix without drastic, long term measures that would topple any government which only has a four year mandate.

One possible solution that is often mooted is for a binding constitution which would make all future governments act as true representatives of the nation, safeguarding the core necessities for the people, mineral resources, land, water & energy so the bulk of future earnings stay here to develop the country socially & industrally. As things stand we may as well be the 51st state. The big money goes off shore & people are pressed financially ever harder for day to day necessities. Hardly surprising people just give up.

The problems we all face, working or not, have taken many decades to establish & will take many more to change.

I'm off for a ride on the bike before petrol prices go up again.
