I was concerned that there would be too great a language divide between here and there.

Still if you could get everything you need except the selector barrel... that is only 1 new bit you need to buy.

Would it hurt to mix and match with used parts thought (used gears/shifter forks from one bike and a used selector barrel from another)?

I would not advise this, unless you can be sure in your own mind that what you have is serviceable and are prepared to discover that the problem still exists after reassembly..

The selector barrel sits in the middle of the apparent symptoms your gearbox is experiencing.
If the ebay example is in good order then it is just...........
like Thomas says, only one part to buy.
(Can't believe they haven't kept it together with the rest of the box though. That is shoddy. Muppets!) :locco:

To my shame, I was being flippant with the French offering that Studley highlighted.
But the above photo demonstrates that these guys know what they're talking about and reinforces my point regards replacing the unit whole to avoid any unexpected complications.

To get the best results and save overall.
Buy used, serviceable and complete.

These guys are well respected amongst the French TDM comoonidi. :) Also, a later gearbox is better than an early one.

Need some advice. I cant get the lower trans shaft out of the gearbox. I got the clutch taken off and the three torx bolts off and it slides out towards clutch side, but I cant get it off the shift fork. Any knowledge on removing this part?

Haynes Manual.
Remove the selector drum retainer plate.
That should allow the selector fork shafts to be removed as well as the selector drum.
Which will mean you should have no forks restricting removal.
Keep the forks on the corresponding shafts. There's some fiddly springs in there too, so make a note of where everything comes from.

So I am kinda stuck and cant commit on purchasing the parts. The one on ebay is from a 1991 so I am afraid that will just run into the same issues as the one I have in there now. The other one is almost out of my price range. I may have to wait till I start making a bit more money to order that one.

Until then I am going to do some other work on my TDM, such as R1 fuel pump, repaint rims, replace tires, bondo and repair fairings, and a few other things. Here is that post.

Sorry Guys, I have been gone for a while. Just started a new job and have to move very quickly into a new city and get everything organized. The job is kinda consuming my life right now and unfortunately I had to leave the TDM at home (2 hours away) in pieces. Either way I do have more money now so I want to start acquiring the pieces to make it work for this summer. I am going to try and locate a TDM/TRX trans now that is post 1993 I believe. If you guys spot any give me a heads up. I am going to try and knock out reassembly in a weekend.

I'm Back!

As I stated before I got hired about a week or two after taking the TDM down to the gear box.... and there it sat...  I have some more free time off and I am doing ok i'm my new job so I want to try and tackle this before the summer. Does anyone have any write ups on how to put the gearbox back together or any good photos of what its suppose to look like?

Unfortunately this bike has sat in pieces for about a year now and its gonna be a pain to remember how to put back together... not idea, but the job was huge for me and unfortunately a priority over the bike.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am feeling lost on this one...

Also I should add: I do have all the pieced to put it back together I believe.

I managed with using the Haynes manual and a copy of the mk2 service manual by Yamaha.  Re-aquaint yourself with the job by having a good read of the haynes aforehand and you should find it all slots back into the casings with little bother.  It's more a question of putting the parts back, in the correct order, than it is about technical knowledge.

Take your time, check and double check, eats lots of cake and you'll be fine. :)

Any problems just post up. :good:

Is there any forum or write up that goes along with this?

Also I cant find studleyramrod's blog on here.

Also I have a pdf of a 1996 TDM 850 service manual, will that work?

Think there is a write up but I don't think it's a comprehensive one.  Will go see if I can find it.

The link is in my sig. :)  Here it is anyway.  http://www.carpe-tdm...=blog&blogid=26

Yes, '96 service manual is fine for the bottom end rebuild, it's basically the valve timing that differs.
