Oil consumption

I'm planning on going to Europe in the Summer, probably doing a couple of thousand miles, maybe more. I'm a little concerned about the oil consumption of my mkII TDM. Currently drinking about 1 litre every 1000 or so miles.
As such, I'm coming round to the idea if stripping the engine in an effort to try to trace the cause. Has anyone successfully sourced their consumption problem? Worn rings? Worn valve stem seals?
While I am it, can anyone recommend things I should replace as a matter of course?
TIA,
Cam.........

Mine has so far done 75k miles of primarily commuting use - no really hard riding like trackdays or the like.
I think it's generally an accepted characterisitc of TDMs/Yamahas.

My mkI uses no oil...sadly I have no idea if it used oil prior to rebuild as it was blown up when I got it lol.
There are certainly more reports of oil probs with mkII than mkI (is that cos the majority here ride mkII's? I ruh roh).
The problem is def amplified by long distance/fast runs. I reckon alot of the people reporting no/little consumption on mkII's are doing lots of town mileage or pootling locally.

I'll second that.......................8 hours of transuk/europe high(ish) speed cruising on motorways and they'll drink the stuff..........I've seen mine go from the high to the low marks in 600 miles Next few days pottering around the minor roads and the level doesn't move!

Definitely the case. My mkII will get through a litre in less than 1000 miles if I am cruising at 90-100mph.
Main engine change from mkI to mkII is the funny crank to make it sound like a vee twin? Can not for the life of me imagine why this would cause oil use, though.

would a 6 speed box cut down on d'oil consumption i wonder ??? lower revs, less stress etc etc ?? maybe all mkII owners shud just buy 900's

i got my 96 mk2 with 19000 now up to 38000 .it didnt use any oil wen i got it but does use sum now.i do differern riding now mainly short thrashes & its geared down 1 tooth so it does spin up quicker.wen putting engine bak 2gether get a perfect end gap on ur piston rings even if this means buying the next size up & filling them 2 the correct size.haynes manual shows you how.

I always thought that with a 'normal' parallel twin, like the mkI, pistons went up and down together; one inducting when the other is powering. Is this not regarded as being 360 degs apart, and that the crank is considered to be a 720 deg crank, due to there being two revolutions per cycle.
I'm probably completely wrong; shall have a quick look at the manual.

Indeed.
This 360degree and 270degree CRANK thing bugs me.......the CAM is also doing the same thing .......why not call it "the 360degree CAM engine" and the "270 degree CAM engine" ? Or even better refer to the firing pattern....that covers all of the components .
