Dear gang,

I wonder if I could pick up your brain on that one.

Bought my 05reg TDM900 in Feb this year with circa 58k on the clock, managed to put another 2k until today - so far so good, much different ride comparing to my previous R6 :-) but I like it more and more.

Now, the problem I've got is a weird annoing sound when I'm taking off in first gear. It is not happening all the time, and it doesn't matter it engine is hot or cold. Rather difficult to describe so I compiled a quick video:


 

Any ideas what that can be? Would it be gearbox or maybe a clutch needing some attention, and how expensive that can be to fix it?

Nothing to worry about.
A lot of them do it, it's just the clutch squealing.
One of mine has done it for over 135000 miles with no I'll effects but the other one doesn't (not often anyway). A good quality oil like Castrol power one or shell advanced ultra helps.
Also make sure the clutch cable is adjusted correctly.

:wifgeni: My MK2 850 does it sometimes when getting away quickly, dosn't do it all all the time though so nothing to worry about.

My 900 did it from new. I knew what it was immediately because it was a watered down version of my 900 Monster.

Its nowt.

change the oil and filter,  Then you know the right stuff is in it.

 

When was it last serviced?

Got lots of service history with the bike, will check once I get back home this evening.

 

But I bet you're right, it wans fresh olive juice. I seem to remember it was alright when I bought it back in Feb

but obviously time/miles flies - guessing changing oil and filter won't hurt so will do it ASAP.

As above, mine does this when the engine is cold and the bike is in need of an oil and filter change. Its normally winter mornings I tend to get this happening. Its a feature :)

My oil is changed around 2000ish miles as it does mostly short journeys.

 

Cheap and cheerful, Halfords semi and a champion X302 filter does the trick.

They all do it, mine is no exception. Nothing to worry about.

Lol , I like an idea of treating this as a feature :-) "Gime oil" it squeals.

 

You pre-empted my next question as well, about filter and oil - will grab that x302 filter from Halfords

but regarding oil I was thinking about "Castrol GTX 10W-40 A3/B4 4Ltr" or " Shell Helix HX7 10w40 5ltr" as Eurocarpars in my hood has it under 20 guid, any particular objections?

 

(I know, asking question "what oil" on motoring forum is like kicking the hive but hell I'm new here :-D )

Personally I'd never put a car oil in a bike but others have their opinion too.
For me it's Castrol power one or shell advanced ultra. I'm currently running petronas Syntium but finding the gearbox a bit notchy.

Mine has'nt done it since I put a Surflex clutch in it. This changed all the plates including the steel ones. It was not a cheap fix. :sorry:

I always thought that loud squealing when taking off on the TDM was SWMBO yelling, "get your ass back here!!!"

Don't forget to fully drain the old oil and do not mix different types, use either semi or fully synthetic !

As CB mentioned in his excellent song.... JASO MA is gonna be the most important thing fur ewe if clutch squawk.  There is a clutch basket mod.   LIAW and udders did it to their 9'ers and Eccles got his 850 done under warranty from what I remember.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Yeah, I thought you could mix oil types as long as they're miserable.  :unsure2:

Posted about this oil topic before.

My local Yam dealer mechanic (rides a 9er) first told me not to mix oils, then got talking to a BMW mechanic who told me the same, don't know the technical details !
